So why is that domain “wrong”? Because it’s not a russian site? How many pages from the States do you know that use a simple .us?

UN control over ICANN will have virtually no effect over domain ownership, because it wasn’t their responsibility anyways; rather it was that of the registries such as the Coordination Center for TLD RU (a Russian-owned organization).
 
The only reason that people make such a big deal about the ICANN/IANA handoff is that they are ignorant, do not understand how the Internet works, and are drawing conclusions out of fear and propaganda rather than knowledge of what was actually being handed off.

I swear this picture is getting smaller every time I see it.

It never should have been .ru in the first place. Yeah, I get it, booru > boo.ru. It’s not funny, and the pun doesn’t justify using the wrong TLD. Good riddance.

To elaborate on what Wiimeiser said, it was most likely banned on the grounds of this law: On Protecting Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development.
 
De jure it’s supposed to protect what it ways on the tin. De facto it allows banning any webpage that mentions homosexuality, drug use or suicide.

I think the idea is to let the domain lapse entirely and to not use it anymore, as otherwise they still have to deal with the Russian internet police. Sure they could redirect it, and then when the domain registration lapsed and got bought out by someone promoting a “brony” “dating” site, users of derpiboo.ru would just think TSP had finally lost it.
