@Mr. YumYum
Indeed, it’s hard to find somebody more “middle-grounded” on the series. I like to think I’m more middle grounded personally. I like Sonic, but I can see why some former fans are disapointed with all the controversial directions the series made. Though, due to all those directions, it’s impossible to please every Sonic fan, or ex-fan.
Like I remember some complained about the games having “too much story,” and wanting less, and focus more on gameplay. Then when the games did that, like with Sonic Heroes, others got upset they weren’t story focused like the SA games.
Same goes for those complaining the series got “too dark/edgy,” while others complain the opposite that it’s to “lighter/kiddy/silly.” Then there are those who want the old characters to return, and others who want just Sonic & Eggman.
Not to mention debates on if the games should be “more speed, less platforming,” and vice-versa.
Everyone is very divided on what the series “should be.”
I’d say that the love/hate for Shadow fits the current Sonic situation: A franchise/character that has the majority of opinions totally polarized. Few are in the middle.

Surprisingly, he won second place on the official most popular Sonic character poll, that Sega did years back. (Sonic got first.)
Shadow’s oddly one of the most popular, and most hated Sonic characters simultaneously. It seems like mostly older folk who only like the first 3 Sonic games hate him.
Touché.

Yeah, you’re kinda right
Let’s just say that Sonic does kinda have a bad reputation in the site.
