Okay, I am compelled to ask: what’s that molecule depicted on her t-shirt? Obviously it’s a fused ring system and it looks to me like a xanthine derivative of some kind but it’s not one that I recognize, though it may also be partially because the artist used structural conventions that are strange to me (what are the dots in the pentagonal shape on the left? nitrogen atoms? oxygen?), and I remember just enough undergraduate organic chem to recall that IUPAC naming conventions for fused ring systems are complex in the extreme and the details have sadly fallen out of my brain due to lack of use.

Given the nature of the rest of the image, I expected… well, let’s check Google Images, shall we? Molecular diagrams of popular recreational drugs with a sexual connotation. THC? Definitely not. Mephedrone? No. LSD? No. Caffiene? No. Theobromine? No. Xanthine? No. Methamphetamine? No. Cocaine? Definitely not. It might be MDMA but if so portions of the molecule are missing. And I don’t really know what the popular sex drugs are these days that the kids are into.

And yeah, years ago I would have been saying “Boobies!” Sad, isn’t it?
