There’s this idea I’ve been batting around in my head where, instead of Sunset going back to Equestria, the tearful reunion happens when Celestia comes to her. Like, after Friendship Games she goes to Humanland to investigate whether the place poses an ongoing threat to Equestria, and as part of that she meets up with her former student to talk over the situation. They cry, they hug, they joke about how weird hands are. You get the idea.

I have a pretty horrible theory… what if she can’t go back?

Surely the Sirens knew about the portal, but it’s not like they could just go through it to Equestria since they were banished. Maybe the Element of Magic did something similar to Sunset at the end of EG1, and she’ll find out the hard way that she’s trapped in the alternate world forever.

Not that it’d be completely horrible at this point, since she has a new life and friends there, but being replaced by Twilight (and later, Starlight) and barred forever from your homeland because you fell victim to the pony version of the Mirror of Erised is just a tad too harsh. Twilight has done (and continues to do) incredibly stupid things and yet, for some reason, Sunset “proved herself unworthy” permanently for wanting to be an alicorn. Because any desire at all to become one seems bad, or else Celestia wouldn’t have hid the fact from Twilight that she was preparing her for it for years, until just before she ascended. If Twilight had known, at all, she would’ve been unworthy as well, so Celestia had to have her stumble into it via the unfinished spell.

She totally should, but its going to take just a little while longer.

Celestia and Sunset were supposedly like mother and daughter in relationship, and they burned bridges with each other to such an extent that Sunset left to prove herself and her own ambition, and Celestia didn’t go after her. Even by Rainbow Rocks, Celestia traded off the responsibility of Sunset’s book to Twilight.

It isn’t exactly as simple as walking through the portal and saying ‘i’m good again’. You ever seen a fight between a mother and/or daughter that leads them to not seeing each other for practically 10 years? Sunset’s trepidation to visit Equestria and see Celestia again is pretty understandable.
