She went to Celestia’s school at the same time as Twilight (shown in comics). She might have needed to drop out of school to help with making money for her mother as her father (seems accepted as Jackpot) might have left them. This way, she didn’t learn more of the intricacies of how higher level magic works.

I think most unicorns have a very limited understanding of magic, since it’s something that must be learned and exercised.
 
The baseline being a grasp of telekinesis inherent to most unicorns.

Trixie was entertaining as a villain but I always felt a little sorry for her.
 
What kind of childhood produces a character like that? Probably one of neglect and abuse …  
Her unicorn-magic isn’t even particularly weak, it’s just that her instinctive control/ intuitive understanding of her magic is really bad. Just a very simple explanation from Glimmy was enough to let her do things we’ve seen a talented mage like Twi practice repeatedly.  
Did no-one ever take the time to teach her the absolute basics? wtf? Poor magician horse.

Why Don’t they just make Trixie like Pinkamena from the Creepypastas and have the first victim she’s kills be Twilight Sparkle and have her get help killing Twilight from Pinkamena
