how about if we evacuate them first, and just glass their silly toys?
And become worse monsters than the Nazis, Soviets, and Moaists combined? Ain’t worth it.
One day we will stop those monsters, even if it means glassing the entire Mideast.
history has shown that the people clawing for power are already dag nasty evil, and guess who gets the power? social isolation corrupts. domestic violence corrupts. hard drugs corrupt. power just helps, whether you’re corrupted or not.
the only reason you think that power corrupts is because people who didn’t want you to have power wrote down in history books that power corrupts. but their interpretation of events just doesn’t fit reality.
Upvotes seem to disagree.
You’re also wrong. History has shown that power can indeed corrupt. It’s just that there is nuance here in that it doesn’t mean that everyone with power is evil, that’s absurd. As absurd as saying that every cut will get infected. No, what the idiom is saying is that it is undeniable that, much like a cut creates a potential vector for infection, power creates a similar vector for corruption.
ah, yea, the singlemost effective lie at keeping the poor, poor. you don’t want to be rich, it might corrupt you! money is evil! throw away your power, like a good $anyreligionanywhere and pay no attention to the vultures behind you picking it up and running away, cackling at the top of their lungs. you didn’t need that promotion anyway.
so is a slave.
I think the point I was making is that having a lot of power removes someone from my consideration, when deciding on who I’m going to do my banking with. I don’t mean to suggest that giving out power completely randomly is the ideal situation, but even giving power completely randomly is better than working for the guy strongly suspected of screwing people left and right.
that’s why they popularize stories like the prince and the pauper, to trick you into thinking this is not true.
@Darth Sonic
I’m of the opinion that the legitimacy of rule of law is directly proportional to the level of social stratification. when people have the power to rule by force, however legitimately they obtained that power, then the rule of law inevitably gets ignored, or worse perverted into a hypocritical tool of oppression. obeying the law isn’t sufficient to sustain rule of law; people must also not have disproportionate power, or the law you’re obeying will be rewritten to say “it’s illegal to not stick your hands up and gimme all your money.”
that’s sort of the point of the book animal farm, even if it specifically referred to the failure of communism in russia.
Real Politik only applies to other nations, because our laws do not apply to other nations. Domestically, Rule of Law must be enforced, or else Rule of Law loses legitimacy. Laws were broken. It’s that simple.
But we’re not giving them power. They already have it. And under that status quo, you and I are alive and well. Maybe not as rich as we could possibly have been in the rosiest of imaginary alternate worlds, but alive and well. What you propose is giving power to other people. Power corrupts. And to get to the point that someone would consider putting them in charge of the banks means they already have a lot of power, must have been brilliant to engineer their way to that point, and so are already corrupt. And therefore also dangerous. Making them more dangerous by also giving them the banks is worse than leaving well enough alone. Changing which corrupt people are in power can’t make anything better.
