In The Dark

It was dark when I woke up. Something under me felt cold and uncomfortable, and I felt numb and a little hurt after trying to move to a better position. I felt a cold drop of water fall on my face, and it startled me a bit. I opened my eyes, letting out a frustrated sigh.

It took a good moment for me to realize I definitely was not where I had fallen asleep. My bed wasn’t this uncomfortable, or cold, nor was my roof leaking. I felt chills run down my spine, and I felt a bit like throwing up right then and there. It’s not a great feeling to find out you’re in a completely strange, dark place, with no idea how you got there.

I felt around a bit, and all I could feel was cold stone floor. “What the hell” I mumbled, my words sounding way more choked and pathetic than I had intended them to. “Where-” I stopped when I heard something move. The sounds were distant, but still clear enough for me to assume it was in the same room, or space that I was in. I stayed as still and quiet as possible, I didn’t want to risk anything, even though I knew it could have been just someone in the same situation as I was in. If there were more of us, well, two would be easier to spot than one if someone was chasing us. I didn’t want to get caught.

I kept listening, no more sounds came. I wasn’t sure if it was a good sign. The other thing might have been doing just the same, listening and waiting. Minutes passed, and nothing happened. At that point I was afraid to even breathe, because I was sure if I did it would hear me.

After a long while of waiting I just simply couldn’t stay still anymore. The waiting, in complete silence was nerve-racking. I jumped up and just simply ran. My fear had turned into ‘I rather die running than hiding’. Adrenaline was coursing trough my veins and clouding up my thoughts. I was lucky, no wall was there to stop me from trying to run from my unseen tormentor. All I wanted was to get away and as fast as possible.

I heard something move behind me, following me. It’s steps made a strange scraping sound, something similar to a dog walking on parquet. The sound made my stomach turn and I let out a screech. It was fast, I could hear it getting closer.

I needed to think fast. It didn’t seem to hear too well, otherwise it would have found me earlier, so I did the only thing I could think of. I slowed down, turned left, and tiptoed as far as I dared, and knelt down. I held my breath and shut my eyes as tight as possible. My heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest, and I could only hope the thing chasing me wouldn’t hear it.

The sounds of it’s steps quickly stopped, and a heavy silence fell upon us once more.

I was shaking, scared out of my mind, when a lightning roared outside. I opened my mouth to scream, but only a quiet whimper came out. Another lightning, and light filled the room. I was sitting few meters away from a window.

I heard a growl from behind me. I slowly turned around to face my fate.

Another lightning lit up the room and I found myself staring into it’s eyes.

Dark grey eyes, grayish brown hair. It looked just like me.
