Background Pony #2E00
Twilight? Are you helping ATP-producing organelles rebel against their eukaryotic overlords? Again?

Well, my next question to Twilight Time is as follows, from joyboybuttonmash:

Dear Twilight,

I was playing this Parasite Eve game that I don’t get. What’s a mitochondria? Are we doomed?

Of course we’re not doomed, joyboybuttonmash. A mitochondrion, or mitochondria if you have more than one of them, is an organelle of a cell; it’s a component of a cell that produces adenosine tri-phosphate, a simple energy needed for the cell itself. They’re like how you have your digestive system that turns food into fuel for your body. Mitochondria are shaped perfectly to maximize their productivity.
Note in the diagram behind me how a typical mitochondrion looks. It has an outer membrane and an inner membrane that forms these little pockets called cristae.

Now, about your game, there are some truths. The DNA that governs our genetic code also exists within the mitochondria of cells. That DNA is referred to as mitochondrial DNA; not only does it encode a few genes, but it’s also inherited by the mother and nor does it change much. Hence, why there’s also a scientific construct called ‘Mitochondrial Eve.’ Now, unless we start to really mess with the fabric of our genetic being, I don’t think we’ll be doomed for a good time. I should know, the book was better.
