Why am I laughing?

Since the kicking fight to the left ishow real horses fight (and this showtends to have the ponies act similar to real life horses except for a gag or such) I imagine that the shoes and boots of the Equestrian soldiers are weighted for greater impact, like brass knuckles for ponies. As for the lack of spears, either this section of the fight is in disarray as mentioned before, or Equestrian troops are trained to focus on CQC. Ponies are certainly fast and maneuverable. They can quickly close the distance and get up real close to an opponent, where long weapons like spears are all but useless. True, this strategy is vulnerable to spears braced against the charge, if ponies haven’t faced a pike-wall then they wouldn’t have the need to compensate for those.
 
Also while the fight looks amusing at first, closer examination does take a darker turn. The hoof fight on the left has already been covered. The wonderbolt in back appears to be trying to break that sombra soldier’s spine. And the guard on the right os being strangled to death.

The two with the hooves going at it, is of course how real horses fight.

Still not quite as violent as the Hooffield/McColt feud. Much more epic, but not quite as violent.

Well in real battles soldiers were supposed to stay in formation at all times so their commanders could adjust their positions to fit the movements of the enemy and so that soldiers could support each other.
 
Contrary to what 300 may have shown when ever individual soldiers were stuck fighting one on one battles with the enemy that usually meant formation had broke and the battle was in disarray, so supposedly the reason the infantry aren’t using their spears and the fighting has descended into hoofy-kicks and wrestling is because this portion of the battle is in utter chaos.

Come on, guys. You do remember that this show is rated TV-Y, right? It was also meant to be intentionally funny in order to lighten the grim mood.

While the world looks industrialized, the battle is still fought the medieval style. WW1 or WW2 themed battle would have been more fitting. But I doubt they would allow machine guns or artillery in a supposedly kids’ show.

It looks like if they take down Sombra, the entire war is over (since his side is being forced/mind-controlled into fighting), so it makes sense that Celetia’s most elite/well trained troops would be there to try and get him whenever he’s on the field.

Cat fighting like girls, dear god if this is how Celestia trains her men to fight I doubt they stand a chance.
