if only the message of the S2 opener was that friendship isn’t always easy, but there’s no doubt it’s worth fighting for. that would’ve been awesome.
 
instead, fighting for friendship fails miserably, when twilight tries and tries to tolerate her friends only to be driven to her wit’s end, unable to save them, and ultimately herself enchanted.
 
the message was that your friends can be jerks, but if you remember what’s good about them you’ll never lose your friendship. that’s a good message, I suppose, if a bit nasty in teaching people to stay with jerks who were once good, just on the hope that they’ll go back to being good.
 
but man it would have been so awesome if twilight was just like “no fu discord I’m not giving up no matter what, because there’s nothing more important to me than my friends” I wouldn’t even blink if she got princessified in s3, if she went and did something badass like that.
 
come to think on it, the s4 finale sort of had her do just that.

Then how is that backwards? That’s not backwards thinking. episode 1 is the last episode! It ends with discord turning everyone evil and dash running away!

No, what I mean is watch the episodes in reverse order, not literally backwards.
 
Parts 1 and 2 are kept in their position though (so part 1 first, part 2 next)

I think the entire message of all season 2 watched backwards went over OP’s head, but maybe I’m just not giving my all when thinking about it.

Interesting interpretation, but I just meant (and I think OP meant) that Twilight’s speech about fighting for friendship makes more sense after watching her friends fight through the changelings

I mean.. if you do watch it backwards, all of it, it does send a good moral to the kids, like that marriage is no small decision to take, even for a deceptive queen that rules over an entire species of love stealing, insect ponies.

so, this is how the story unfolds backwards.
 
Discord faked them out from the elements blasting him, he taunts them, messes with the city, the ponies are one by one going insane, only for Discord to bring everything back to normal and then petrifying himself back, because, he felt bad about everything he’d done, I guess.
 
and the ponies have no idea what’s going on…. as some chaos still persists at the end.
 
The End(?)

So if you watch it backwards, it ends on a cliffhanger with discord winning. I don’t know if that’s a good story there.

It has no doubt worth fighting for…
