Oh hey - something I forgot to mention - I mentioned Eternal Inflation in my reply; so, before Hawking died, he worked on a paper on Eternal Inflation, and it was taking some (weeks? months?) time to get published, and he died during that time. So his last paper was actually solving a big problem in the mathematics of Eternal Inflation titled, "A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation". I'm not sure exactly what "exit" means in this context, but from what I've gathered it's a pretty significant paper for bolstering Eternal Inflation.
 
So that actually ties back to Hawking a bit :q
