Since my
original proposal was ignored (as were most of my arguments) and the thread closed (without proper response to my
last post there), and I still (perhaps very wrongly) hold out some hope that rational humans still wield some power in this world, I’m going to try to actually effect some change in regards to the “infidelity” tag.
“Infidelity” is defined in the English language as violation of rules or disloyalty or breach of trust. In a sexual context, it means having sex contrary to a promise made to stay faithful to a certain partner. However, simply having sex with someone who is not one’s regular partner is not prima facie proof that any of those things are taking place. Polyamory and open relationships exist.
Currently the tags on this side
do make this assumption; hence “adultery” implies “infidelity”.
From a tag-usefulness approach, this is awful for anyone who:
- wants to search for images that feature actual infidelity. Those images are tag-indistinguishable from images where there is no evidence of such.
- wants to filter images featuring actual infidelity for the same reason; the filter would be overloaded with false positives.
- wants to view images of ponies having sex with ponies who are not their regular partner, but do not feature actual infidelity. This search would hit actual infidelity images.
Simply tagging “polyamory” on certain images is not enough; There are three cases to consider.
When married ponies have extramarital sex, they may be:
- Clearly cheating.
- Clearly not cheating.
- Cheating status is unclear, leaving the interpretation to the viewer.
While option 2 can be covered by “polyamory” or similar tags, there is no way to distinguish 1 and 3 for searching or filtering purposes. The implied “infidelity” tag is harming usability.
Since my last attempt at making a change got summarily dismissed for being “too big”, I’m restricting myself to the very modest request:
Remove the “infidelity” implication of the “adultery” tag. “Infidelity” should only be used for images where infidelity (i.e. a breach of sexual commitment) is clearly taking place.
I’m also open to any suggestion that can be used to distinguish options 1 and 3 above, though keeping “infidelity” for 3 would be a misuse of language.
