Well a lot of people feel the franchise went to hell with Pony Life/the later seasons of FIM/the moment Lauren Faust left, so of course G5 will be viewed sceptically.

Well, to be fair, I think it certainly was as far as popularity and the size of fandom is concerned, even if G5 ends up better than Fim ever was, it won’t see the level of popularity that G4 did.

A basic rundown of what we already know (I commented it yesterday on Equestria Daily, but I thought it would be appropriate to post it here as well): It will be a 3D movie distributed by Paramount (who wants nothing to do with 2D features) and animated by Boulder Media (which is in charge of most current animated productions from Hasbro) that is going to have brand new characters quite likely designed by Imalou (who works at Boulder and is involved with a CGI Hasbro-Paramount movie).

Imalou is a pretty good artist though, and Boulder media has proven itself fairly competent, so I think that’s worth having some faith in at least.

Are Boulder Media just the animators? Or do they also do writing?
Writing is what I’m most concerned with. Because the franchise lives and dies on the handling of its characters.

On a basics level, it raises the whole matter of hair. “Real” ponies have both manes/tails and short coats, toys sometimes have the former but almost never the latter, and the cartoons were abstract enough it didn’t matter - till now. Are the models going to look like the toys, or like ponies?

Yes, you’re right. I do remember they also worked in the first season of The Amazing World of Gumball, who had 3D-animated characters that aren’t just robots. They did a nice job there!

They’ll probably look like Hello Pinkie Pie or something. At most they’ll be cartoonish with a furry texture, A fur effect like the one that made SFA famous is technically possible, but not something I see happening.

Just discovered a 3D series animated by Boulder Media. Its name is Go Jetters and it has very nice animation, although it lacks a bit when it comes to texture (it’s far better than Hello Pinkie Pie). But I think Boulder can do fine with textures, as they apparently animated some of Mr. Robinson’s scenes in the first season of The Amazing World of Gumball (it was on their reel video at YouTube).
