Trump making excuses for cutting military budget
Oh - wait - that actually makes sense. If the US cuts its military budget then Putin can divert some funds into oligarch’s pockets. That will help him a lot.
Ah … but in fact what’s happening is that the US administration is trying to pull money out of things that Biden had advocated for and redirecting the funds into things Trump has advocated for in his “America First” stuff - mostly arming the US/Mexico border and upgrading the Nuclear and missile defense reserves. Also they’re redirecting funds from the American Ocean Command to the American Ocean Command instead. Looks like much of the cuts will be to programs intended to save money by moving military bases out of areas threatened by ocean rise and other increasingly severe weather events - you know, all that ‘woke’ stuff the Republicans don’t believe in and were supposed to save money in the long term, but now the short term is more important and who cares what damage happens in 10 years because you built a new base on a flood plain that will be below the projected sea level in 5 years. Right?
The Pentagon did not directly deny those reports, but instead described an effort aimed at removing funding from programs favored by former president Joe Biden and using it on those advocated by his successor Donald Trump. [Barrons]
But, as reported by the Military Times, Trump’s plans are not what Congress voted for or what the law requires, so he’s going to be going to court over this as well. And much of the cuts will be to programs designed to compete against China.
So, kind of a kiss and a reach around for Xi Jinping, I guess?

Earlier this year, Trump publicly suggested that all NATO countries spend at least 5% of their gross domestic product on defense, a figure that would mandate a nearly $1 trillion military budget for the United States.
So to meet Trump’s own mandate, the US would have to instead INCREASE spending 15%.

Saying that a problem does not exist by diverting attention to a different problem is not solving the problem, it is sweeping it under the rug under the logic that if something is not talked about then that something does not exist, which goes without saying that it is false.
