My first thought upon seeing the sub-heading was “as opposed to “The City That Breathes?”
Very soon.
Since it’s Spooktober again, I’ve been playing a few Fantasy and Dark Fantasy games (namely Runescape, Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Mistover and Hexen, the first of which is at the tail-end of an almost month-long Halloween event), I decided to give a reboot to an old profile.Admittedly, this one that I was going to do originally, but it’s one I decided to do given the time of year, and the holidays related to it.Hopefully I’ll have the one I really want to make out within the next few months, maybe around Christmas/New year’s or just after. I don’t quite know, yet.I had a lot of fun going over this and making a few slight tweaks here-and-there, as well as adding a bit more toward the end, and I hope you all have a wonderful day/week/Halloween.Debatably one of the most enigmatic figures among Ingracia’s leading and highest-ranked Pantheon, and as the patron Goddess of Necromancy and of her own namesake realm, Nox is by far one of, if not the most highly-favoured of the Gods, particularly those who deal in or practice dark magic, Necromancy and other spell-based arts of the like.In terms of personality, Nox is calm and reserved, but this is not to say that she is shy or even afraid of anyone. In reality, it would be fairer to say that she takes her role as a patron Goddess deity and as the deity and guardian of her namesake realm with an almost strict, no-nonsense attitude. This, however, leads her to be somewhat alienated from her fellow Gods and Goddesses, and them from her. This isn’t to say that she is not kind at all, as should she find the soul of an individual who had a kind heart, or a noble soul, she will greet them in kind with open arms and a warm, welcoming demeanour. This done, she will offer them a quick and painless journey, most likely to her or her sister’s namesake home realms. If she were to find the opposite however; an entity with a black or wicked heart, then any feelings of mercy, hope or compassion she might have had will be discarded then and there, instead being replaced with disdain, scorn, and even outright revulsion and disgust, and will offer no remorse in her judgements.Nox, if she can be found at all, is usually seen scouting the various regions across Ingracia, making full usage of her Soul Lantern in an attempt to locate any wandering ghost or spirits before aiding them in passing on to whichever realm awaits them. Her aforementioned realm is perhaps one with the most mystery surrounding it as almost nothing is known about its nature, save for that it is a realm saved only for those who are rumoured to be entirely soulless (through magic or otherwise) or have yet to be judged accordingly by one or more of the other members of Ingracia’s pantheon.A little more of what can be said, however, is that, when off-duty -if Nox ever considers such a thing a possibility or not is unknown – she is said to be found roaming, often in such of souls to help decide their fate.Another duty of hers is to ensure that the hundreds, if not thousands of mages scattered across Ingracia are utilising magic related to her and her realm errantly, be it either Necromancy or Soulweaver magic.Necromancy itself is generally a broad term used for all manner of soul-elated magic, or magic that uses a form of soul manipulation. Where Soulweaver Magic differs from most, if not almost all of it is that the caster is capable of weaving with the spirits they form a union with, to create something referred to by many as the Soulthread. With it, they are then able to weave and construct various items, objects and even entirely new spells or sub-types of magic.Soulweaver magic allows for the use of the various types of Elementals native to Ingracia to be used when casting spells, as well as the use of Crystallized memories, which can be found in almost every magic-related archive, store, guild and the like. The chronicler of Iridia has been known to make frequent use of Soulweaver magic in conjunction with their already greatly-varied crystallization, and has often earned the attention and praise of Nox and the others for the diversity and creativity their spells often possess. When outside her namesake realm, Necromancy as a whole is usually looked down upon because of its relation to the dearly departed. The Magecraft itself is blacklisted from a fair number of magic-related schools, colleges and the like because of the preconceived notion that it only has but a single use- that being profaning the recently deceased. In reality, however, it is more akin to a Swiss-army knife, with there being a wide variety of ways to utilize it.Most notable of which is finding closure among the family of those who have passed on, or reconnecting a person’s soul with their body in the event of an accident once they have been healed. Another way that has been known to be used by a select number of individuals in detective work, often solving murder mysteries and other similar cases as well as finding closure, as mentioned before. Those who become practitioners of necromancy and other forms of Magic like it are blacklisted from almost every one of the aforementioned schools or colleges, leaving it to Nox herself to use a spell which is shared among her and her fellow deities, Avatars and the like to split herself into or form multiple copies of herself in order to teach her would-be disciples personally.Although she may seem aloof and indifferent to begin with, as long as whomever she is teaching abides by the rules she sets out for them, and refrains from using the magic being taught on innocent or unsuspecting individuals, she often grows to enjoy spending time with them, opening and even warming up to them over time.Among the numerous forms of afterlife on Ingracia Iridia’s being a supposed paradise for all mages, scholars and the like, and Luxor’s being and Akrah’s being the same for merchants or vendors and warriors and combatants of all types, respectively, Nox’s is rather more inclined to the magic used by her followers and disciples. Likewise, there is also one for Lein, whose Realm was crafted by Iridia with Stargazers, Astromancers and astrologers in mind. Some of the older souls in each of the above mentioned realms, and the many besides,a re from Ingracia’s almost long-lost history, and the kingdoms which rose, and have also long-since fallen, collapsed or seemingly disappeared.Far north of what is now Kellebrir, in the far marches of Kel’Zek, near the verges with the now Arexian kingdom of Gaillus, there was a mountain that flew.Well beyond the western territories of Gal-garth, far opposite the Skystone Mountains and a desert painted in the dazzling shades of a glimmering sunset, a grand tower, one fit for the Gods, sat alone near at the edge of the world.Equally distant to the south of Bo-Leoth, hundreds of miles past the Verdant Forests and the grasslands opposite them from Bo-Leoth and the Bluebreeze ocean, a city of gardens had once waited to be born.Past the Endless Ocean, on the other side of the world, deep within what used to be called by many as the ‘Phantasmal Sea’, there was perhaps once an island shrouded in impermeable mist. The places these souls used to inhabit are well beyond ancient, each a legend of monumental stature, almost entirely without equal and completely unheard of in many cases, the few that have heard glimpses of them likely having been granted the rare privilege to step within Risulka’s temple, and receive what meagre knowledge and wisdom she has, regarding each of them. The interactions Nox has between her sisters are said to be intriguing to say the least. Kiary’s outgoing, adventurous personality resonates in contrast with Nox’s introverted and demure attitude, whereas Iridia often acts in a manner not too dissimilar to that of a doting older sibling, doing all that she is able to in order to ensure Nox’s safety and wellbeing.Nox tends to keep people at an arm’s-length, not unlike a certain habit of Lein’s, and she spends more time observing the people around her rather than interacting with them, which often leads to further alienation. There have been a few she has interacted with over the course of her life on Ingracia, and fewer that she has gotten close to. She might not be the most vocal or openly emotive, at least at first, but if one were to put in the time and effort needed to get close to her, or show they want to understand her better, she would give them the world.Iudex of Rebirth~
