Cartoon/Western Animation General

I wish we could get another movie like Who Framed Roger Rabbit where the animated characters looked and acted like ones from classic cartoons rather than have them look ultra realistic and make fart jokes. I wouldn’t care if they were hand drawn or CGI, just as long as were colourful and different from real life.

If there’s one thing the Into the Spider-Verse trailers have convinced me, it’s that I was wrong about CGI. There is absolutely plenty of innovation and experimentation animators can do with CGI as opposed to hand-drawn. The potential just remains untapped.

Yeah, CGI isn’t bad, I liked how it was handled in the 2012 TMNT cartoon too, and that actually mixed some 2D animation or still art in too nicely.

I think people are too harsh on 3D/CGI cartoons.

It takes just as much work to do computer animation as hand drawn animation.

CGI can be a fantastically inventive medium, I think. But the industry has been locked into trends towards photorealism that limit what it’s truly capable of.

I couldn’t agree with you more.

Since animation, like every other form of medium, is built on trends and change, I’ve gotten used to the fact that most animation now is 3D/CGI.

Again, the problem isn’t CGI (as I was literally saying just above, Into the Spider-Verse is CGI and it looks fantastic). The problem is that everything looks way too samey. There’s no experimentation.

I really dig Spider Noir’s look in Into the Spiderverse.

I don’t get the backlash over Thundercats Roar and the new She-Ra cartoon. The original cartoons were nothing but mediocre toy commercials.

Something about trying the make an action cartoon into something more comedic and the artstyles looking the same as most cartoons.

Does anyone else remember the Godzilla cartoon that aired on Cartoon Network back in the late 90s-early 00s?

Funny, I heard complaints about that back in the 80’s when cartoons were more toy based or in the 70’s when the majority were Scooby Doo knockoffs or had limited animation. I get your point though.

Then there was the ’90s, which saw the rise of edgy “Ren & Stimpy” style shows, Nicktoon nockoffs, and anime.

Then the 2000s were mostly anime, or silly/edgy CN/Nick thick outline style shows, CGI shows, and anime nock-offs. Not to mention, the demise of Saturday Morning cartoons sadly.
