Corrupter of the pure
Unpopular opinion: The “people dating monsters” trope can be good and done well IF the directors and writers in western media didn’t have their heads up their asses so hard.
I know I’m going to talk about Twilight for a second, but Robert Patterson is actually a good actor(He’s best known for Cedric Diggory from the Harry Potter films); the problem with the movies is that Meyer, the director of the movie and several of the main actors were complete gobshite. If you have a bad writer, a bad director and your co-actors have about as much emotion as a rock then yeah the movie is gonna suck.
The problem with a lot of the movies that come out under this trope is that they forget to actually focus on the character’s relationship to each other and developing their characters. The way these sorts of movies are currently being written is, “Look at how emotionless I am.” “We belong together” “I’m a vampire” “That’s okay I’ll just be emotionally needy while ignoring your needs for the next two hours” “Okay”.
If one of these movies was produced by a good director with a good writer and good acting crew it would be a good movie, but as such I don’t think we’re going to get a good movie under this trope any time soon cause the audience these sorts of movies are attracting don’t want characters with actual emotions, rather they just want to see someone constantly ripping his shirt off. It’s like why Michael Bay keeps being allowed to make Transformers movies; the majority of the audience isn’t actually there for transformers they just want to see explosions(tm) and Megan Fox/whoever replaced her in the latest “movie”.
