Also, while were on the topic of Sunset’s divine form, I’d like to call into question the symbolism in her face. Most specifically, the red coloration around her eyes.
 
Its very interesting, while everything about this transformation stood out as awesome, this part of it was one thing I would never have predicted.
 
The red outline around her eyes most resembles a mask. Now, obviously no one is going to mistake Daydream Shimmer for anyone else but Sunset, but maybe that isn’t the point. This form is obviosuly more angelic themed then superhero themed, so masks for the sake of having superhero masks is kind of unlikely.
 
So….
 
..maybe the mask-like outline is symbolic.
 
Sunset is as humbled as she is heroic. She has completely abandoned the path of supremacy and being power-driven. So maybe the mask-like outline is her own way her personality believes that no one person should represent the power of the divine. That such a path leads to arrogance. While we clearly know its sunset, perhaps her patterns on her face symbolize ‘anonymity’? True power without a single person’s name or face stapled to it?

True, but as others have pointed out, Sunset willingly searched for this power within herself, and the other 5 willingly gave Sunset their energy as she called out their elements so that she could have the power to ascend to divine levels. Plus, as @PonyPon, it didn’t leave a smoldering crater XD
 
Will and choice matter a ton here. I completely agree, the other 5 are responsible for helping Sunset find the path that took her this far, and that’s why their power was needed for something this big. One could argue this applied to Twilight too, although to be honest, she hadn’t really gained some true introspection until season 5. That aside…
 
…more important that Sunset chose her own method for ascending, even slightly more important that she willingly wanted this power for the sake of all her friends, the mane 5 willingly entrusted their power to her. Very Super Saiyan God-like. It didn’t just trigger something by accident. The fact that Twilight’s ascension didn’t even have that made it almost completely separate from being ‘an achievement’. It resulted her simply being an alicorn, and by Celestia’s declaration, a princess, which is life changing, but no real reason behind it.
 
But this? With the 5 willingly giving her power while she is searching for the power deep inside herself as well? The result was Sunset being on an entirely different level then what power Twilight has, even after Rainbow Power. One can’t help but feel that Celestia was trying to artificially create something for Twilight that, in fully reformed Sunset, was the real deal. That’s not to say that Sunset in inherintely superior to Twilight, at least in a thematic sense, but more to say that her ascension being so arranged and forced made it less so.

You know, when her friends saw her transformed like this, they were smiling. And here’s a few things I believe they were thinking!
 
Rarity: She looks so divine!  
Rainbow Dash: Awesome!  
Pinkie Pie: I’ll call her Daydream Shimmer!  
Applejack: She’ll set things straight for sure!  
Fluttershy: I just know she’ll save Twilight!

Exactly. Would be funny if the missing conversation between Luna and Celestia in Crystal Empire went something
 
Luna:“You know, sister, maybe we should wait and let Twilight WILL herself into ascending, instead of just forcing her to absorb her friend’s auras a little”(now HILARIOUS in hindsight)” and force her magic to turn her into an alicorn.”
 
Celestia:“Nope, sending her the cursed book.”
 
Seriously though, considering how less accidental the whole Twilight becoming a powerful alicorn thing went yet how similar it happened to both our Twilights compared to Sunset’s REAL ascension, the stark difference between Princess Celestia and Principal Cinch was that Princess Celestia actually knew was she was doing. Sure Princess Celestia maybe mostly well intentioned, but with her bias at bat-shit levels, its not that reassuring.
 
This was extremely refreshing showing the other angle on things.

But yeah, this movie took ages of Princess Celestia’s ideas that Twilight was the one and solely important hero deserving of recognition, and turned it into smoldering ash.

Holy shit…I think its safe to say Sunset’s ascended way past what Princess Celestia and Twilight ever imagined.
 
So Sunset was ALWAYS Celestia’s successor(or to improve her teachings) while both Twilight’s fate was actually more akin to Luna’s. Those two stars at the end…
