I think they just think that the old crown has more recognizability with the target audience.  
Kind of half expecting them to give them all new jewelry of some type next season anyways.

If they given up the elements why does Twilight have her old crown, Is the castle gonna make new elements that will activate their rainbow powers? cause that’s the only thing I can think of.
