The writers REALLY didn’t want to make a sequel, did they?
When Sunset was Celestia’s student, she would need a way to send reports and letters (since, no dragon like Twi had), so she had a magic book that linked to a book Celestia had. Since the magic of the book (Celestia’s one is now in Twi’s possession) still works across worlds, Twi comes up with the idea (inspired by Pinkie) to harness and amplify the spell in the book to reopen a link to the other world.
I was expecting them to just hoof wave “magic science” to re open the mirror by basic brute force and plot convenience.
Ugh.
That just…ugh.
Yep. Twilight Sparkle plugs the Equestrian Smartphone (Sunset’s journal) into the machine and bingo, portal open “Pinkie Pie is a genius” etc etc.
And then, we don’t see ponies as ponies for the rest of the movie. (There might be some stuff during the credits while the end music plays, but I skipped those to see Humanland Twilight talking to a barking Spike dog about the mystery of Canterlot High)
Seriously?
It’s not the tree, but the book?
sigh
Pinkie Pie is the one that comes up with the solution to use the magic of the Cellphone Journal (seriously, it vibrates and glows when Sunset writes a message in the humanland counterpart) to open the mirror-portal. Twilight cobbles something together using magic science parts she had laying around and it works. The book opens the portal.
What do you mean, Pinkie solves it?
Seriously, we got a flyby shot of Ponyville (including GIGANTIC shining tree playset castle towering over the little hamlet). Two lines from a delivery stallion dumping books from Celestia’s library- including the magic Sunset Shimmer book (Celestia must really want to sever all ties to Sunset…). And then about 5 minutes of Twilight’s mirror room before Pinkie Pie solves the 30 moons dilemma, brace for more sequels.
