Well, yeah, that’s true. Still, I like to imagine the power of the Elements affecting Sunset to her core, but the realization that her demon form was the embodiment of her own darkness IS a pretty effective wake-up call.
In my opinion, the Elements didn’t even need to do that all that much. Just by Sunset having her “dark powers” removed (same as Luna) and having her wits restored, it seemed that the realization of what she had become was enough to crush her spirit.
Different people react to the same trauma in different ways. That’s Psych 101.

Go right ahead, man! I always found it annoying when some fans call bullshit on Sunset Shimmer’s defeat/reform in the first EqG! It’s not her fault the Elements of Harmony reset her moral compass!

Yeah, that transformation didn’t exactly look voluntary, to say the least. Also, after she was cleansed by the Elements, she fell victim to the crushing weight of all her misdeeds over the years (possibly from BEFORE she left Equestria). Speaking of which, I remember the complaints about how sudden it was that Sunset became remorseful, after her defeat, despite Luna experiencing the EXACT SAME THING after she was purified from being Nightmare Moon!
In fact, remember all the headcanon theories about S1 Luna being super-awkward and adorkable? Sunset’s new self in Rainbow Rocks reminds me a lot of what people were hoping Luna would be like, before ‘Luna Eclipsed’ effectively Jossed those headcanons into the ground.
I suspect she doesn’t wear any. She’s just that hot, and that forceful with her charisma.
