Which part? Sunset Shimmer was basically presented as “Twilight gone bad”, so it’s not a stretch to assume she’s fairly skilled and/or powerful. And I’m not saying Trixie is below average, just that they might have certain general skills or abilities that Trixie never bothered learning, so, for example, Rarity would likely outperform Trixie at anything requiring precision (like a game of darts).
Oh, well that’s not fair.
Yeah, I suspect she has mostly flashy showy stuff and not much that’s practical for purposes other than working a crowd. I doubt she’d be on par with, for example, Sunset Shimmer, and it’s possible that even unicorns closer to average, like Rarity or Lyra, would be able to outperform her at certain tasks.
I always figured that Trixie’s talent was show magic. The magic wand and cape seem to imply that.
I disagree. Shining’s magic seems to be limited to the base unicorn spells (levitation, etc) and his shield. Which makes sense, because his special talent is defense.
What makes Trixie a good spellcaster is that her special talent IS magic, so she has proficiency with a wide variety of magic. Far more than your average pony.
If they were making a shield, Armor would win. If they were doing anything else, Trixie without a doubt.

yes at least the amulet is using more magic to cheat, twi just used friendship to cheat and she still would probably just use friendship without actually gaining more alicorn powers
