If I were to venture an opinion, I’d say the non unicorn ponies would likely have something that would go inside of their mouths to protect their teeth when they know that they are going into combat.
Similar to a boxer’s mouth guard.
The pommel was just to help with the tang of the blade. If you can wield the entire blade, it functions more like a sharpened quarterstaff than a bladed weapon.
And wielding a steel handle with the mouth? Ouch. I don’t envy any earth pony. Must have awesome dental and a mandatory monthly check.
The pommel provides balance to a sword, so that at least is justified. As for the handle, presumably it’s there so pegasi and earth ponies can wield it by holding it in their mouths.
I suppose they could. Talons would be more conductive to holding weapons, theoretically.
But they can wield weapons, right?
Well they have weapons built in, so they don’t really count.
And Griffons.
