Basically, yeah. Shining Armor hasn’t had much in the way of development, but what we have seen of him is definitely enough to like him.

I don’t automatically hate characters because they lack character, because what do you expect in a girl’s show not revolving around these side characters. Shining, Flash, even Sombra (graaaah, Cryssssstaaaalllsss) don’t get much shown from the thins slices we get of their lives. Same with background ponies, their blank state is an interesting springboard than a weakness. And I don’t by default hate well-meaning people, he’s adorable with Cadance, and he’s a good brother when he’s literally not mind-controlled.
 
I don’t think you’ve met me if you think I shouldn’t be enjoying either of those characters.

And I am a King Sombra fan. What do you find interesting in Shining Armor? Only Flash Sentry is more bland tham him.

Yeah, that’s basically Shiny’s problem. He could be bad-ass, but he’s not allowed to upstage the girls. So we only get glimpses of it, such as the Epic Wife Tossing scene.

The makers are probably trying to avoid macho stuff, since it’s a show for empowering girls. If you want guys being badass, you can watch any of hundreds of other cartoons. That being said, it would be fun if Shining Armor got a badass moment in the show.

Sombra at his weakest made him turn tail and run. I would actually clap in approval if he died or got maimed or whatever terror/horror awaits him. The only character more bland than him is Flsh Sentry!

Shining Armor was responsible for Twilight Sparkle’s fillyhood development. He’s capable of leading the royal guards, who follow his command, and is willing to risk his well-being to his country and to Princess Cadance, whom he loves so much.
 
I don’t think Captain of the Royal Guard is a title given away willy-billy either. All these claims are canon, even without the comics. People can say what they want about Flash Sentry, but Shining Armor a failure? Never.
