Works best if it’s not the main source of reproduction, but as an alternate manner to deal with potential threats. This way they are forced to serve the hive, or face their former friends alone. Or isolate themselves and starve to death while still alone.

nobody thinks this through. If Changelings reproduced this way, they’d starve to death in a couple of generations… because there’d be nopony left to feed on!
