This sort of thing is what id love to see in the show between them. They should never ever be allowed to be real full on friends - itd ruin Trixie for a start and Twilight needs ponies who dont worship at her hooves.
 
A sort of frenemy thing going on, where they bother and cajole and insult one another constantly but actively enjoy it. Sort of a Venture-Monarch style relationship where existing to be one anothers rivals would be more than enough. Itd be a great dynamic.
