Quite a brilliant twist, and one that makes sense. Cheese, like Pinkie, gets his greatest joys in life by making other ponies smile and laugh, but cooped up in his factory, he’s unable to see the effects his gags produce, and so the way to get his lost laugh back is to make ponies around him laugh, rather than trying to make him laugh.
