Description

This is how I feel about G5 so far: it’s too boring to hold my attention, and even though I disliked Pony Life, G5 is just so bland and boring that the only way I can tolerate consuming any sort of G5 content is through its version of Pony Life. The main cast all come across as pale imitations of G4 characters, and the only one I can consistently care about is Pipp because even though I would normally find a terminally online e-celeb instagram whorse annoying, Pipp is objectively the cutest of the mane five (Izzy is very hit-or-miss, the rest are just plain dull). Also I enjoy the 2d animation of Tell Your Tale as opposed to the tryhard 3d Filly Funtasia-wannabe style of Make Your Mark. And TYT doesn’t take itself too seriously, as opposed to MYM’s self-importantness. For these reasons it is a far better spiritual successor to Friendship is Magic than MYM ever was. But even then, the Mane Five fall short of being able to hold the show all by themselves without there being some kind of antagonist to cockblock them. Therefore, Opaline’s scenery-chewing and Posey’s casual bigotry are absolutely necessary to maintain the viewer’s interest lest it wander like the mind of someone trying to type an image description at two in the morning when you know you have work tomorrow. And speaking of work, you can’t run a show like this when three characters are doing all of the heavy lifting to keep it interesting.
In other words, when the parody of the thing supercedes the thing itself in quality and workmanship, you know you’ve utterly failed.

Who cares if they say its Calarts style cartoon. The point theyre making is that TYT is better than MYM. We should be debating MYM not the Calarts term.

I only used characters I liked on this one.
@TexasUberAlles
I used ‘CalArts’ because it’s a commonly used and recognized term to describe a particular artstyle which could otherwise be referred to as ‘Beanmouth.’ And, as implied by the meme, I actually liked Tell Your Tale a lot better than Make Your Mark. If I hated it, I would have immediately switched my profile pic to something else the minute April Fool’s Day ended.

@Visklim
The main issue with “CalArts” being used as an insult is that a lot of people don’t understand the fact that “I don’t like that art style” is not the same thing as “that art style is objectively bad and anyone who likes it is objectively wrong”.

I’ve heard ‘‘CalArts’’ is not technically correct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Institute_of_the_Arts
Besides, cartoons were always meant as ‘moving pictures’ so regardless of times and technique, cartoons need to be simplified in at least something to make the work bearable to animators, especially if there’s not many of them or budget isn’t super high, plus country choice matters too (this is why regular cartoons can be different from anime for e.g. adults like Wandering Witch Elaina, where it’s frame by frame, 2D and not too simplified, with all shadows etc.). I recall FiM as being simplified from G1 and G3, because it was made in Flash (and ToonBoom later, for some works) and for expressive things to entertain people with (similar was with G3.5/Pony Life, art style wise, as they’re chibies, though G3.5 (Twinkle Wish Adventure) wasn’t made in Flash, but by that time they knew frame by frame is exhausting and can produce silly faces/errors not on purpose). G1 that was made on cels wasn’t always perfect either, you get errors from ‘‘MLP: Tales’’ from time to time, for example. Digital frame by frame G3 too. MLP always was simplified to a degree, and I think that’s what makes it cute and fairy tale-ish and also helps to draw them faster if you’re a fanartist. At the end of the day, there’ll be just favourite style(s), all equally valid. Plus a cartoon has a lot of aspects, like music or lessons that we cherish and that help us in some ways. ^^

Pipp is an epic pony who is quirky and fun. She has always held the show on her back, because she’s a diva and a strong girl who can handle it

@Phemto
I’ve seen FIM posts on Tumblr that have over 31,000 likes and reblogs within the last month, there are still plenty of fans out there even if a lot of them aren’t directly engaging much anymore.

I’m inclined to agree with your assessment. The fad time of 2012 was a peak, and it probably fell pretty quickly to a fairly constant number. Most folks just drift away and don’t feel the need to make some kind of announcement (which I always felt seemed kind of weird), and new ones drift in without making a fanfare.
I think this website is a pretty good measure of how active the fandom is. The number of new posts has been pretty constant for the past 10 years. If 90% of the people left, why are we still seeing about 90% of the activity as in 2012?

People need some perspective here. Losing 90% of the people in only three years is absurd, and I would have noticed that if it had actually happened. If anything, G4 ending in 2019 would have caused that, and at the time I feared that a death spiral could occur if we hemorrhaged fans that rapidly. But that didn’t happen, and I haven’t noticed much significant reduction in fandom activity since then. I think our fandom is a lot more stable (no pun intended) than we give it credit for.
I think it would be more accurate to assume it’s 20-40% of its size in 2012 (back when bronydom was a fad), though many of those people either weren’t that deeply committed to begin with or went in so hard they quickly burned out, and most left long before the G5 movie aired (ignoring the huge influx who temporarily returned when G4 was ending since they didn’t stay). It’s very hard to estimate the size of the fandom since anyone can join or drop out at any time, and surveys like State of the Herd are only answered by those who are both aware and interested.
The fandom was always centered around FiM, and I don’t think anything is going to change that at this point. G4 was far better than it had any right to be, and you would need another talented showrunner with broad creative freedom to be able to rival that.

you need to acknowledge the fandom right now is in shambles, like maybe 10% of what it was when G5 Movie aired.
It’s certainly not what it was back in 2012, but I think it’s for the better.
When sites like Derpibooru and FimFiction get new uploads on the hour every hour, I think the people we still have are committed for the long haul, and there are plenty of newer people who weren’t around 12 years ago.
BABScon is ending this year because of lack of creators and hype.
It’s probably more because of mismanagement on their part. Other conventions are still going strong. A brand new convention even started just last year, with 500 attendees, and everyone who went had good things to say about it. Even if some of the existing cons close, new ones could always emerge to take their place.
TLDR: I think the fandom has certainly contracted since 2013, but is now taking a quality > quantity approach and is all the better for it. And nothing proves that lots of people still care about MLP than the fact that a vigorous debate is now raging over this low effort shitpost.
