That’s a really good point on bad G4 episodes doing better as a short.
They could’ve totally done that, too. Other shows in the past had two, 11-min segments, some would have a few of those in place of regular 22-min episodes.
Though I could only think of 10, maybe 12-ish truly bad episodes, and only because:
  • Applejack is worst background pony severely underdeveloped to shoulder a story as a main character,
  • an episode didn’t have enough time to develop properly (or in the right direction),
  • Supporting characters improperly or unable to carry a story strong enough as a deuteragonist (often acting OOC),
  • Some unaffiliated guest writer stepped in from another show and flat-out ignored the core content in favor of gimmicks (or combination of this and one of the above)

By contrast, I think the G5 story and main characters were rushed into a finished, initial product, which hurt the development at start (whereas G4 was lovingly and carefully pieced together with the M6 and Princesses in a unique world). But now that they got the ball rolling and writers and developers are taking a little inspiration of what we’re doing as fans, the character and stories are doing better.

If we’re comparing shows.
The MYM style definitely came into its own; I found that the 3D models had this extra level of expressiveness that 2D can only match if it’s hand-drawn. And they got really creative with the expressions later into the show. But the animation didn’t consistently have the juice that TYT could have. For example:
As for stories, I’m rewatching G4, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a bad episode and thought “This premise would work as a five-minute short”. TYT’s strength is that it let them supplement the main story with smaller stories that couldn’t fill up a full 22 minutes. It will be interesting to see how TYT handles being given more room to breathe.

I actually do trust TYT to tell a good story. The writing is usually pretty strong. But the animation just can’t deliver moments like this.
G.M. Berrow, the MLP novel author, is a lead writer for G5.

I agree with many points. The 3D style of MYM looks kinda weird static, and the first few episodes were almost low-budget cringe, but once you put those characters in motion combined with the texturing, it’s fantastic. It took a bit of time to grow on me, but their animation sequences has surpassed G4 in cuteness levels in some aspects, which is no small feat. This is probably because the 3D aspect allows them to take advantage of cuter, better angles with better timing.
TYT however, also looks a bit weird but can place far better emphasis on expression where it really shines. That’s simply the natural advantage of 2D. It’s stories took a while to get going, but once they got a grip on the characters things took off.
TYT is has been consistently pretty funny and even emotional, which is impressive for the short time they have to work on.

It’ll never top G4 entirely, but it’s doing 600% better than I anticipated, with content still able to carry the core fandom.

this is my opinion.
TYT is G4.5-ish mlp but having more charming emotion than the 3D’s one. i like TYT’s style more than MYM’s one, cuz i’m sure still liking 2D mlp than all of the 3D’s. but i still find MYM good cuz it is Disney’s quality (for some reason), and one of main series (that i’d be forced to like it, lol)

I just watched the “finale”, and it was fantastic.
I got emotional with Misty’s speech, and based on the epilogue, I’m hoping that it’s not the end. It’s too good of a show, and as much as I love TYT, there’s no way they could tell a good story in 5 minutes, at least in my opinion.
