They do have excellent backup options at least. I have my Android phone set to automatically backup my photos to my NAS, which in itself has dual hard drives in raid 1, and I can drag and drop to and from them in my Windows PC without any extra software.

Also, as a tech person, this story is very alarming. Even if you don’t care for backups, as soon as work files start disappearing, that means that backups needed to be done ASAP.

And yeah I’m backing up stuff a lot more now, too. Thank god I DID send WIPs out for most of the pics I’ve lost, but heck I dont even know what most of these files were, a lot of em were unpublished personal work. Hopefully I won’t have to worry about losing anything after the switch to the new tablet tho! Rn I’ve had to stop using my other completely cause the last file I tried to creat corrupted immediately. i dont wanna brick it before i can back it up, oof!

Useless advice
Bless Celestia i was so chatty and flexing, sending wips, screens gifs. I could recover big part of work just from screens. It’s alot of work, but it less than starting from scratch.
So just safe bg and main characters separetely in transparent files to compose later

I do wanna point out that modern day Android tablets aren’t too bad if you don’t expect too much from them, i bought a 2019 galaxy tab and it’s the loudest alarm clock i ever had.

ipad, first off, and second thanks very helpful xD id say buying a tablet and having it last 8 years is IMPOSSIBLE with anything android those tablets are crap xD also my workflow is adapted to my ipad, which has a better stylus and screen than even my most expensive wacoms

thats a good thought, thank you so much for the detailed answer! unfortunately, the itunes backup doesn’t help me much as the art files themselves are, frustratingly enough, stored within the procreate app itself so they must be exported before acessing them anywhere but in-app. I did try that tho! exporting these in psd format, and they were blank as if i opened them in procreate, and i tried exporting a couple directly as procreate files, using 7-zip to open them cause supposedly it handles the compression method you mentioned the files being. on my ipad the exported files are 22bytes, not promising, if i export em to itunes and access em on my pc theyre 4kb, but are completely blank/empty when opening em with 7-zip and winrar. i think they’re fucked past recovery, unfortunately. but it was worth a try!

I would recommend not installing any apps or tools on the device. The best option is to move as little data as possible and perform a full unencrypted local iTunes backup. Then, you can work on those files. If you don’t have enough free storage or if the backup fails, you can use a tool like iFunbox to copy specific files.
If I remember correctly, Procreate files are simply LZO/LZ4 compressed ZIP files that contain metadata, a thumbnail, and raw RGBA data for each layer. Depending on the damaged part of the file, it may be possible to fully or partially recover it.

I appreciate the offer, and that you’d like to help! but tbh I’d feel more comfy with suggestion as to what software to use for that, rather than sending out files I dont even know the contents of myself, at this point. I’m not super lookin for software assistance as much as help to just move forward. I’ve tried everything reasonable and some kinda sketch things and a lot of the moves I’ve taken has made stuff worse, so I’m hesitant to do much else at this point. EVen accidentally opening the files turns em into a one layer file with no contents, so i dont wanna try moving em around and risk locking up my ipad again. at least not until I have a new one to fall back on!

Could you share some of the corrupted files? I can try to fix/recover them.

it was scary enough when it was just old files, it started with a big ipad glitch that i had to restore after, but ever since it just keeps happening at random. yesterday i closed a comm for export and it just corrupted immediately, i dont have any way of even getting that work back x.x

This is not a fun problem haha, but everyone’s support and help means SO MUCH TO ME omg, y’all way too sweet <3

Thanks for sayin that, I was raised with that toxic “handouts make ya weak” bs mentality so im still struggling to push past that and ask, but yeah, in this case i really just gotta. It’s terrifying seeing this kinda stuff I’ve put so much into just poof.

Sadly, even getting a successful icloud backup to work has been in vain, it always fails. Even that wouldnt let me recover any art without restoring my ipad and losing everything new ive made. Procreate art files are stored in the app itself so i cant even export them easily, i gotta do em one by one and it takes a min of 5 mins/file and i have thousands haha.

I WISH i could just put my ipad away for now but i gotta pay rent. i gotta keep workin, and unless this gofundme is STUPID successful itll be a bit before I can upgrade. It’s not ideal but it’s all i can do!

Your friends are right. There’s no need to be ashamed. It’s literally not your fault. It is the device that is failing, not you.

That background is extremely alarming. Save what you can on a different storage platform (cloud is great for data reliability) and then do not turn that device on again. I hope you can get the money you need, man. You’re a really good artist. You have your own spot in my collection, and I’ve been following you for years.

I don’t have money myself at the moment as I’m between jobs, but if your need hasn’t been fully met when I get the next job, I will come back and make a contribution.
