The question you should be asking isn’t “does the Deus Ex Machina work better?”, it should be “Why do we need the Deus Ex Machina in the first place?”

In G4, the answer to that question is “because the silly caribou incel vikings would get their balls crushed and their asses kicked back to their nuked island otherwise.” The answer in G5 is “…We don’t.”

oh chief i actually think it’d work… less good? because a lot of the caribou dues ex machina relies on ponies being so dependant on magic that when taken away it’s crippling? idk

I’m not trying to “revive” it since i am part of a very small group just enjoying it in a specific niche, this is more for my own kind of record keeping than to garner any interest or following!

A little advice here from a veteran:

If you’re going to try to resuscitate FOE, I would suggest basing it off of G5 instead of G4. Reason being: it could actually work in G5.
In G4, it took a lot of diablous ex-machina (including a certain ‘crystal rooster’), hand-waving, contrivance, and plot convenience to explain how exactly the caribou even managed to get past Lindinsbarne without raising 20 different alarms and getting the absolute shit kicked out of them, let alone why Celestia and/or the main 6 didn’t just blast them off the face of the planet when they tried to pull their little coup of theirs. I’m not going to waste your time listing every little problem with G4 FOE because I’m fairly certain you’re not interested in hearing it, so I’ll skip to the next point.

In G5, it would work because… well… Equestria has already fallen. Just not in the ‘sex slavery caribou’ way. Not only that, but magic has stopped being a thing (at least until the end of A New Generation) and even now they’re not fully… in-tuned with it yet. Yes, the caribou wouldn’t have access to the crystal-convenience to brainwash all the stallions into shape, but in G5 They wouldn’t need it either. They could rely on old fashioned divide and conquer strategy, and (ironically enough) only the Earth Ponies would be able to offer any real resistance pre-ANG, and even after ANG, the whole thing is on rather shakey ground.

Yes, I know there isn’t as many names to drop on G5 as there is on G4, but thems the breaks.

Vivi is a sona I have for the FOE setting in conjunction with her counterpart Heat Haze, and I basically just needed two examples of blue collars for this! There’s not much really to be told about her beside she’s heavily influenced visually by Vivi from Mystery Skulls! She’d be considered a diplomat that shows up to gatherings and the collar has no real effect on her as she’s ace like me so there’s no sexual inhibitions to be loosened
On the topic of Tempest, I play her in two servers, and as such this is more my interpretation of her than common fanon. Tempest is unaffected by the magic of the crystal cock due to her staying out of Equestria unless the Storm King needs her to go there. She hardly wears the collar when in Equestria and as such is not bothered by the runes. Given everything Tempest accomplished in canon, I’d say her natural will would be enough to help her mind stay her own. In server lore, the Storm King worries about her wellbeing in Equestria, since the caribou fight dirty. Tempest is a capable mare but he can’t help but worry over her when he sends her there for diplomatic meetings. He’s not foolish enough to allow the Crystal Cock to taint his mind by going to Equestria himself

Can you tell me more about these two? Who is Vivi and what is her situation? Is Tempest being influenced to be a more “proper” mare to any degree by all the magic, or is keeping her collar off and her own natural will enough? What about the Storm King and the way he sees her?

Thunder’s female form would probably be this, she’s too proud of herself to be truly red yet too much of a slut to be a black. Plus she’s a diplomat so it checks out.
