Eh, they have been giving away gems for watching ads for most of the lifetime of the game. That said, it just hit its 10th anniversary and FiM has been finished for years now so it probably will end in the near future.

I recommend getting the game and DO NOT spend any money on it. Lately they are constantly giving away gems and ponies for viewing daily ads, so it might be on its way to abandonware.
