This shot is still cool all these years later. S3 was a pretty big step up for the animation. I don’t think there’s ever going to be a concrete day that G4 “stopped being good” because the show fluctuated in quality quite a bit on different aspects. Season 1 was riddled with animation errors, but later seasons suffered from the natural drift in priorities that happen when a show is headed by several people, many of which weren’t on in the beginning.
Funnily enough past me pointed that out a decade ago to the month, and as for the Luna thing, there was a small controversy over her changed appearance and personality, but people forget about that now due to how MMDW basically made everyone forget about any controversies before it. IIRC the controversy was more within the fan fiction circles than within the general brony populous, because I don’t remember the controversy being that big on the venerable Ponibooru.

As someone who had The Hub starting with the season 2 finale, can confirm, was a great channel. Discovery Family was good, but it was never quite the same, so when FiM ended, it was a much easier decision to (eventually) switch to streaming and cut the cord. (With the brouhaha going on with the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, I’m honestly kinda glad I no longer have the means to watch that channel)
Ironically if you ask most fans these days, you’ll more often hear that “it went to shit” after season 6 or 7, not season 2 or 3 like you’d hear back in our day.
Which I’ve always found hilarious since season 8 is my favorite season, followed closely by seasons 5 and 4 (in that order).

You know, this is the first time in years that I’ve heard that take. Still just as ridiculous as it was a decade-plus ago. However, that (as well as Ebalosus’s reply) reminded me of how, back in the day when it first aired, people were much more critical of Luna Eclipsed than they ended up being.

I rewatched season 3 recently and was surprised by how well it held up, so much so that it’s one of my favourite seasons these days, which would’ve been unfathomable back in 2013.
You can blame Faust for that more than anyone else, since outside of the series opener, you could be forgiven for completely forgetting about her given how little she mattered to the narrative.

Fim was already dead when Hasbro failed to bring back s1 Luna again in Season 2 of fim.
If Hasbro had given s1 Luna more eps in fim, then I have no doubt that fim probably would’ve been a better TV series for it.
Of course it’s already too late for Hasbro to go back and fix that mistake and fim is already doomed to be forgotten when G5 is half-finished with it’s series run years later. Probably around 2027, 5 years later.
I won’t be surprised if by 2027, fans go “What is mlp:fim?” if you ask them if they’ve seen the mlp:fim series.
I’m so tired of people saying this was when MLP started to go downhill. I mean it wasn’t totally perfect but it started it’s decline around either Season 5 or 6.
It’s strange how I miss an American TV channel that I never watched outside of pony livestreams. And season 3, you were short and had many poor episodes, but you weren’t a completely lost cause.

Here’s a few weird Season 1 moments for your enjoyment.
