Agreed, there are not too clear contradictions between Discord’s story and the episode when the hologram of Twilight appeared to the Mane 5, there was a lot that was left out from both versions. Discord simply told the backstory and creation of the Unity Crystals, pointing out the mysterious figure that triggered it. Hologram-Twilight told that the magic was in danger, and that she had to save it by collecting it in the Unity Crystals - and something else. (magic dimension?)

It looks like Discord had started at the beginning, and Hologram-Twilight at the end. So it is possible to stitch together the two narratives by filling up the void, in which Opaline will play an important role.

It is known from MYM C1 that the magic was out of control and had become so dangerous that it had to be brought under control. Again this was confirmed in MYM C2 ep1 when the magic sabotaged itself. Opaline in C1 explained that the magic wasn’t stable until the earth pony magic came out (very strong contradictions between C1 and C2 as well!), and in C2 she meant that it can be controlled. Her goal is to have as strong magic as possible, as she had admitted in C2.

Which could indicate that Opaline didn’t mind the magic getting out of control due to emotional influence at all, that may have been her plan from the very beginning. And she was about to do something so drastic that Twilight issued warnings against it. We know from elsewhere in MYM/TYT that Twilight defeated Opaline and took her magic away.

It was not said by Hologram-Twilight that the magic had been taken away, but she spoke of a spell that must have been broken, without explaining this, as opening for Opaline to return. It happened after Opaline’s espionage magic came into contact with the magical screen around the Unity Crystals.

Latest news about #9 has revealed that #6 may show a possible message from the past, perhaps stored in the Unity Crystals. I don’t believe in coincidences; Hologram-Twilight appeared possibly because Opaline’s magic was detected, we know that the Unity Crystals were possibly intelligent when they chose Sunny, and now this.

It’s possible that the Unity Crystals are a portal between the Mane 6 and the Mane 5. “I’m with you” - and a strange coincidence where Sunny “talked” to the heroines of the past - It’s suspicious, all right.

That remains to be seen. It would be seem a big mistake for the show to let the comics handle what became of Discord between the end of G4 and the start of G5, so I’d personally expect the show to firmly overwrite this particular storyline at some point in the future.

As usual with the IDW comics, don’t take their storylines too seriously.

That doesn’t make any sense. Just because G4 comics weren’t canon doesn’t mean G5 comics have to follow the same rules.

Hasbro had made it clear that what is not contradicted in the G4 comics is canon in the G4 world, so it is impossible to dismiss EVERYTHING from the comics as a rule. As with Accord in the IDW comics, he has not been contradicted by the show, or how the changelings arise, no one knows where the mysterious and magical nut came from, lots of potential that could be explored.

But here there are contradictions between the movie, the TYT, the MYM and the IDW comics… and the old rule from G4 loses some of its validity because MYM is not as tone-setting as the TV series which then dominated everything in the G4.

The comics aren’t canon to the show. If it was, then fim eps and the fim comics would’ve been canon but the fim comics had some villains in it that didn’t even show up in the fim TV series thus making the comics non-canon to the fim TV series and I suspect that the G5 comics will end up being the same as the fim comics and will be non-canon to the G5 TV series too.

The answer to this question is - we don’t know. We are unsure where the Discord arc can be placed in the chronology of the episodes in TYT and MYM in Season 1 of G5. Even TYT and MYM have trouble entering into each other to create a canon coexistence. And even MYM has trouble with the G5 movie, so no one knows which is the show! Here, Hasbro had failed to force the MYM writers to coordinate with the TYT and IDW comics, and even with the movie. Too much friction between the writers in MYM, TYT, IDW and even the movie.

It might get easier in S2, but then we’ll have to wait until next year to see if the Discord arc can fit into the growing patchwork. From what has been seen so far, it seems that the timeframe for the Discord Arc is less than two weeks, maybe down to just one week. MYM and TYT last several months, a season lasts one year.

But the Discord arc could be important for future G5 episodes because it could give hints about what happened when Equestria collapsed, and to be honest the MYM writers need to follow up what the IDW writers have posted. We can see Canterlot in S2 as it appears in the IDW comics, and we can get important lore about what happened when Equestria collapsed. There was no small amount of criticism against MYM regarding Twilight Sparkle and the theories about how the magic disappeared.
