not getting/liking it=/=overthinking and overly critical.
but according to the comments here, one little girl was the same overthinking and critical than the older fans, the existence of this girl kills any assumption that only older fans can be annoying, fun killer overathinkers.
Sadly, the thing they’ve been “schooled” on is what real life princesses actually are. As McCarthy said, not everyone can be a princess, but everyone can have the morality that comes with being one and its actually attainable. It does deserve kudos for that, though.
Granted, this particular girl is not really the “princessy” type, so that’s probably part of it. She’s still looking forward to Season 4, and boy did her eyes light up when I told her about IDW’s comic books.
I suppose it’s not much of a surprise that little girls would be confused by MMC & Twilicorn. They’ve grown up being schooled by Disney and Mattel (and Hasbro) on exactly what a “Princess” is – a position of authority that is acquired by birthright or marriage, not merit. MLP probably deserves some kudos for trying to proffer a new definition of “princess” that is more inclusive and attainable (they tried it back in G3 but failed miserably).
I can’t think of another form of media, especially one with such a young target audience, that actually has princesses doing something other than being kidnapped or looking pretty.
The whole reasoning for why Twilight would deserve being a princess, because of her hard work, dedication and natural ability mixed with her bourgeoisie upbringing in Canterlot would go over the heads of the target audience.
there’s been a TON of hatred over it. They don’t have the foreknowledge of stories involving ‘being a princess in fictional stories is trained for like a career’ and think it was hamfisted out-of-the-blue to sell toys. Their BS detectors went haywire.
Toywiz even had a poll, and they get roughly 50/50 kids and adults, 33% even before /mlp/ involvement loathed the idea of AliTwi, and another 18% were ‘disappointed, but will continue to watch.’
of course, when /mlp/ hit it got skewed to 95%, so now it looks like they just raided it either way, but Hasbro is once again screwing up its own target demo.
They do watch Pony. I know a young girl in my neigbourhood who loves the show (she has a soft spot for Derpy and literally squeed when my S.O. informed her we snagged a Derpy from Hot Topic).
Amusingly, we asked her what she thought of “Magical Mystery Cure”, expecting a positive response (because, y’know, target demo). What we got instead was a rant about Twilicorn; she didn’t get it and wasn’t happy about it.
My little sister does. She calls me “pony boy”. ¬_¬
Its made even more goddamn adorable by the fact shes holding in her cute little hands a little Pinkie Pie plushie. I just want to go to a convention and get 50 dollars worth of MLP toys and give it to this girl to see her smile.
As someone who got to meet a celebrity for his birthday, it’s a awesome thing. Granted mine was J.D. Roth back when he hosted Fun House so yeah, not as cool as this little girl’s birthday present.
