No, the previous generations also had Cutie Marks on both side and they didn’t use Flash. And on all shows up to G4 there are angles where you can see both Cutie Marks at the same time.

I don’t care either way.
But it makes more sense for a single cutie mark, even in G4.
Because in G4 they always talked about getting A cutie mark, not a set of cutie marks.
Actually, in G4 with flash puppet animation, most of the puppet parts were simply mirrored, so that’s how it became a double cutie mark initially. And then they went with it.
