Gentle Star had a huge smile form on her face. Tonight was the night. Nightmare Night. Her favorite holiday. And to top it all off, she got a personal invitation to a costume party from the Queen of Saddle Arabia herself! She made her way towards the center of town where she promised her friends that she would meet her there. After a few minutes, she saw four familiar faces; two stallions, and two mares. Gentle Star smiled as she embraced the two mares, with the stallions joining in.
“It’s good to see you all here!” Gentle Star smiled, looking at the costumes of her friends. She started first with a cerulean Pegasus mare. “Ocean Soul! Are you a doctor?”
“I am!” Ocean Soul smiled at her, playing with her stethoscope. “Doctor Ocean at your service.”
Gentle Star then looked at the silver stallion, who was wearing armor. “And your husband Maverick must be a knight!”
Maverick got down onto one knee and bowed before Gentle Star. “Sir Maverick.” He told her before standing up. Ocean Soul giggled.
“He’s my knight in shining armor!” She grinned, kissing his cheek. Maverick blushed, looking at his wife, then nuzzled her gently before she spoke. “Nopony has a bigger heart than him!”
Gentle Star then turned towards another couple; a purple stallion and a white Pegasus mare. She looked at the mare first. “Milky Way…” she said thinking for a moment. “What are you supposed to be?”
Milky Way sashayed her braided mane as she showed off her silken gown and custom-made heels. “I am a Greek goddess.” She spoke with a soothing tone. “Just call me Maia.” She then looked closer at Gentle Star. “And you must be an astronaut of some sort…”
Gentle Star smiled, pointing to a hammer and sickle. “I am. And if you ask Maverick, I’m a Russian astronaut. The first ones into space ever! Right Maverick?”
Maverick had to pause and think back. Not because he didn’t know, but how he once was a human. So many years ago. He nodded. “It’s true.”
Gentle Star then looked over at the purple stallion. “Andrewmeda…” She paused. “Are you… a detective?”
Andrewmeda shook his head with a smug grin, looking at one of his black painted hooves. “I am a vampire hunter. Tonight is the night of nightmares, and I’m here to send back the undead where they came from.”
Milky Way laughed, placing her hooves on his cheek. “Ohhh… tough stallion.” She squished his cheeks and baby-talked him. “Oh your such a cutie aren’t you? Aren’t you?”
Andrewmeda hated being teased by Milky Way, but gave a small smile as Milky Way giggled.
Gentle Star continued. “So… did you see any vampires tonight?” She was trying to entertain him, but saw that Maverick froze up. Concerned, Gentle Star approached him. “Was it something I said?”
Ocean Soul looked uncomfortable as well. Maverick spoke.
“We… that we saw something.” He began. “There were two mares who were not dressed up, but had fangs and… different eyes. One was red with a short mane, and the other was smoky with a longer mane.”
“The red one, I think her name was ‘Bloodline’ kept referring herself as ‘this one’.” Ocean continued. “The other, however, had a fixation on me and Maverick. It… felt unnatural.”
“So you think vampires exist now?” Milky Way asked.
“I don’t know…” Maverick concluded. “All I know is that once they saw her water mane, the two ran back out of town.”
“And you didn’t stop them…” Milky Way teased Andrewmeda, who frowned, grinding his teeth.
“Something just felt… off.” Ocean Soul said, sounding worried.
Maverick stood by her side, showing his shield, which bore the same emblem as his Cutie Mark. “Don’t worry, my love. As long as I draw breath, I’ll be your shield, and your sword.”
Ocean Soul smiled as she kissed his head. “Such a gentlecolt with such a big heart…” She smiled.
Andrewmeda chimed in. “Instead of worrying about what happened, how about we head out to the party? The night is still young, and there are plenty of memories to be made!”
“I agree!” Gentle Star smiled. “I’m so excited to go to this party with you four! It’ll be so much fun!”
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Milky Way smiled as the five left to go to the gala. It was a bit strange about what they had encountered, but the evening was in fact young, and there would be plenty of memories made on that Nightmare Night… (c) Andrew Faehling (
