Background Pony #7FCD
@GrimChariot
A very interesting note since Katherina and Jenn called themselves Queens and the rest princesses. So does Queen Novo and the Abyssinian King and Queen. Celestia clearly ranks above all with no one else above but calls herself princess when she is a queen. Meta explanation is that ‘Queen’ sounded evil regarding the evil queen in Snow White and Maleficent, but that didn’t stop some people from calling her a possible tyrant.

It is not as unusual as it may sound; in the European country of Sweden during the Middle Ages, one of the greatest rulers, Earl Birger, was neither king nor high-ranking nobleman in the 13th century when he was given a temporary position that made him the country’s most powerful man, the title “earl”. In Scandinavia, this title is not hereditary in the first centuries of the Middle Ages. He and several rulers of the same land were not even knighted. From Poland, kings were forced to use the title of duke under pressure from the German-Roman emperors, until the pope of Rome allowed them to use the title of king.

These titles in Equestria / Equus seemed to be a little more loosely defined and more of a Scandinavian background, where royal status was far broader than in the rest of Europe. The title of king or queen seemed to be based on two specific criteria; merits or inheritance, and those with inheritance claims seemed to have administrative responsibility rather than unlimited power, while those who on their own merits received royal dignity, must constantly prove their ability to remain in the seat. We know very little about how a hierarchy of power is organized and according to what criteria these are based on, from our past the monarchy is far much more than the usual display in popular culture, which is based on the authoritarian king in early modern times and the medieval tyrant from the European past. In Sweden, it was possible until the 13th century to kill the new king if he was not accepted during the tribute train through the country. In other lands, kings could be elected and deposed.

Celestia was actually meant to be a queen, and her sister who came later during the planning work on the first episodes of S1 in G4 should have the same title, but Faust and her team were overruled by Hasbro who thought this title would be very negative for children raised at Disney movies. Thus, they received princess titles; although it may be different according to the ponies’ own language; from S10 comics we have “reigning princess” and “retired princess”. Alicorns automatically receive princess titles because Equestria has an aristocracy, which means that those who are meant to rule must have a high and dignified title with respect.

It is of course not canon, but it is possible that the royal sisters and Cadence could not take higher titles because they were already taken. Maybe Celestia and Luna had a mother who had the title of queen? And we know that Crystal Empire would not have been complete without an imperial title. If these were held by alicorns, these titles may be unavailable to later generations. Non-alicorns do not have to take such considerations into account.

But Celestia in terms of position in the global hierarchy of power on Equus - until Twilight took over - was of the same importance as an empress in comparison to all other monarchs, primarily because of her nature as an alicorn, and then by having the largest and the most advanced state, which has the most potential magical people in the entire world. Her princess title is really just a camouflage.

Technically speaking, the title doesn’t matter when every other species uses queen/king.

It more like a comparison of rank since Celestia is, bar none, a queen in everything but the title she no doubt picked for herself.

So technically correct, and arguably defining the nomenclature for an inheriting individual and the acting individual is a good idea to avoid political flubs purely based on title differences.

It seems Cozy Glow really NEEDED the (normal, non-friendshipy) formal education Twilight gives on her school.
a) Equestria does not currently have a Queen.
b) It NEVER have had a Queen [The City/State of Unicornia technically did].
-> She eventually realized this mistake, skipping directly to “Empress of Friendship All Lands”.

Beating a child is abuse, end of story.

The reason behind one who should have more control-not less-then a child beating someone with no hope of fighting back means jack shit.

-Someone who was choked by his father for not “getting a better fucking job” in highschool.

To be honest, I don’t think Cozy Glow’s life was as bad as she thinks. Her father yelling at her because she slammed a door? She probably deserved it, since she shouldn’t be slamming doors. Yelling at a child or beating them because they did something wrong shouldn’t be considered child abuse. It’s not like he “abused” her for the fun of it, and they never tried to put her up for adoption or abandon her. I feel like her mother could have given her attention if she just had time to. Many mothers in real life are too busy to spend time with their children. Go ahead and feel sorry for her, but this is nothing compared to what Chrysalis went through.
