I higly recommend you not to give up on pipe cleaners too quickly. They can be a lovely material to work with (and my early attempt looked like… well… an early attempt ;)). One way to make sculpturing with pipe cleaners a lot easier is to create a bit of a skeleton / framework with styrofoam balls. Using those makes proportions a lot easier and one can also just put loose ends into the styrofoam.
