As long as he is alive, there is hope. We saw anti-aging spells when trixie had the amulet. There’s plenty of research potential there, and with his sister’s love of research and colossal magic ability I’m sure she could find a way to turn back the clock

There’s no proof in fim that shows that Alicorns age.
 
Maybe if Hasbro shows us an aged Celestia, Luna, Cadance, Flurryheart and Twilight Sparkle in G5 mlp then the ‘Immortality Blues’ thing can finally be put to rest at long last after 10 years.
 
So we’ll see. Hopefully, Hasbro does the right thing with G5 mlp. If not, then too bad. Alicorns being immortal will forever be canon.

Well Lauren Faust only had input on the first two seasons, then she distanced herself from the show to try to remember Equestria as she saw it in her head. In so far as Faust’s era of the show was concerned, there were only three Alicorns, not five.
 
As for external media relating to the show, that stuff’s fine and all, but its canonicity to the show is debatable at best. Except the IDW comics; those have their own separate canon altogether.
 
But whatever. I’m really not here to argue.  
If you wanna say that Celestia and Luna were born Alicorns, that’s fine.  
If you wanna say that they weren’t and instead ascended, that’s also fine.  
If you wanna say that Alicorns are immortal, that’s fine too  
If you wanna say that Alicorns are simply very long-lived, that’s fine as well.

Yes, but Lauren Faust has always affirmed that Celestia and Luna were born alicorns, even the Diary of the Two Sisters seems to affirm it and in the mini series of comics from IDW entitled “Legends of Magic” we can see Celestia and Luna very young already alicorns.  
So there are various sources that affirm this and Celestia, more precisely, said that a natural-born alicorn is somethig that Equestria has never seen and probably Celestia and Luna were already born before Equestria was founded and since they themselves were young to that time and maybe their parents or other alicorns weren’t there to explain to them what it means to be born as an alicorn could explain why she and Luna had no information about it.

Celestia said that a natural-born Alicorn has never happened in her lifetime before Flurry. If it never happened in her lifetime, that would also mean that neither she nor Luna were born Alicorns either. Even among the five Alicorns, Flurry Heart is an anomaly.

I think that those who are born alicorn, like Celestia, Luna and Flurry, are immortal, while those who aren’t born alicorn, like Twilight and Cadence, are just long-living …  
So don’t be sad Shining, even if you are the first to leave, one day you will see your beloved again!  
Or convince Cadence to turn you into an alicorn, you become long-living too and the problem is solved! XD

The whole “alicorns are immortal” thing is dubious. Celestia and Luna probably just age really slowly, but aren’t immortal. Cadence and Twilight might now be blessed with significantly prolonged lifespans (perhaps several centuries), but again that’s not immortality. Flurry… is Flurry, no one knows how long she’ll be around. Shining Armor will still die first, so to him it’s all a moot point.
