This is a family tree of Equestria’s rulers that I made for another project, though I’m not sure if you could really call them a ‘royal family’ since the Equestrian Princessship is not hereditary.
This is based on the show canon
Plus cozy glow betrayed Princess Twilight and tried to eradicate equestria.
It was never stated in the show that they became royalty after either of their children became royalty. The episode ‘Once Upon a Zeppelin’ seemed to treat them as commoners.
Yes, I definitely agree that Starlight fills the role better.
However, was Twilight really tutoring Starlight for a specific purpose beyond just reforming a villain? The purpose of this picture is to illustrate successors and potential successors. I can’t list every student at Celestia’s school as a ‘former student.’ I only put down the ones that could have been her potential successors. Same goes for Twilight and her school.
I’d say Starlight would qualify better.
There’s probably a couple of people who think that. It’s possible. But this chart is based only on what’s shown in the show or what the writers have said.

Cozy Glow was a student at Twilight’s school, but she never had a direct mentorship like Celestia>Twilight or Twilight>Luster. Cozy Glow was a teacher’s pet, not a candidate for succession.
