Lunar Supporter - Helped forge New Lunar Republic's freedom in the face of the Solar Empire's oppressive tyrannical regime (April Fools 2023).

@CronoM
I didn’t really know that due to its just one dialogue that I can’t seem to find on here.
It doesn’t look like ALL of the pages are posted on here.

Really, they need to bring back NMM and touching on that much more. Like having Luna accept said powers to protect Equestria.

The comic also had another book where apparently a meteor infused with NMM/Luna’s malice crashed, that showed potential but unfortunately they insulted said potential with apparently the only things made from that is freaking talking apples.

@Phoenixflambe
I know. Wikia’s get kind of confusing when the person explaining the situation is intentionally lying for 2 chapters.

The original definition Luna gave for what the Nightmare Forces are… turned out to something that literally doesn’t exist. No pre existing embodiment of evil called the Nightmare Forces possessed Luna to turn her into Nightmare Moon, she simply let her own godly power and pent up emotions made her go Vader.

The corrupted nyx, who by all rights could be called Nightmare Forces, as they are literally the forces of nightmare moon, are an actual thing, though we don’t know their true nature until later in the arc.

So yeah, its confusing.
CronoM

@Phoenixflambe
Like…initially in chapter 5-6 she described the “Nightmare Forces” as a formless embodiment of evil that pre-existed Luna and took over her body to make her Nightmare Moon. That was her lie. The sentient creatures the mane 6 fought on the moon were just the minions of it, which we find out later were once innocent creatures. I just refer to those as “Corrupted Nyxes”
CronoM

@Phoenixflambe
The Nyx? Oops, sorry for the confusion.

When I was describing the “Nightmare Forces” I was referring to the actual singular malice-filled spirit that not only corrupted the Nyx and was Nightmare Moon herself, but the same malice filled spirit that entered Rarity to turn her into Nightmare Rarity.

The Nyx were just innocent creatures that was corrupted by Nightmare Moon’s/“The Nightmare Forces” power. They arent the source of anything, just Nightmare Moon’s/Nightmare Rarity’s corrupted foot soldiers.

I wasn’t referring to the Nyx at all. Sorry if using the plural term was confusing.

Luna’s alleged “Nightmare Forces” that she claimed corrupted her and forced her to become Nightmare Moon was actually one singular being that was born from herself….herself, Nightmare Moon.

My point is, she was initially claiming the Nightmare power didn’t start with her, that she was possessed by a pre-existing Nightmare power that turned her into Nightmare Moon….

…but then she finally owned up to the truth and admitted all the Nightmare power came from herself and only herself. Nightmare Moon was her Vader, and the spirit that possessed Rarity was her King Piccolo, her dark half. In the comic canon, the sentient persona known as Nightmare Moon didnt die when she got hit by the elements of harmony, she just got extremely weakened and retreated back to the moon, eventually returning to possess Rarity.

That’s what the wiki said yeah? Originally they were the Nyx which got corrupted into the Nightmare Forces by Nightmare Moon who was Luna’s darkness which then corrupted Rarity into Nightmare Rarity.

@Phoenixflambe
Really prefer that “Nightmare Moon” wasn’t some outside force that happened to find a unlucky victim to take advantage of and possess. Since it messes up Luna’s potential there.

Um, you do realize that’s the actual canon in the comics right?

In book 5 and 6, Luna gives her explanation that the Nightmare Forces was an outside force that happened to possess her, while in her thought dialogue boxes she’s admitting to herself that she’s lying about something….

…and then in chapter 7 and chapter 8 Luna publically announces during the battle with Nightmare Rarity that her prior explanation was a complete and utter lie, that the Nightmare Forces completely originated from her soul (“King Piccolo style” for anyone who knows early dragon ball lore) that never existed prior to Luna.

The confusion and disinformation came from Derpibooru spreading the information from 5 and 6 like wildfire, and then not nearly as many people spreading the ACTUAL reveal in next two chapters. Thus, a lot of people are under the misconception that Luna was telling the truth in Chapters 5 and 6.

While Discord revealed with time travel in unrelated chapters that other very powerful beings in the past fell to their inner darkness enough to manifest into dark alter egos, the Nightmare Forces was all part of Luna’s soul from the getgo.

The reason that the nightmare forces, aka Luna’s dark half, chose to possess Rarity is because Rarity shared many similar traits and insecurities that most synchronized with Luna’s own, thus the easier to exploit and possess. Luna’s dark half didnt have enough energy to materialize physically.

So yeah, it was all Luna’s massive potential from the getgo. Yet in the show, Luna’s rarely ever used.

The whole Nightmare Forces thing was the “symbiote” thing they were referring to pretty much.

The Nightmare Rarity arc was good but it would have been better to say the Nightmare Forces(which leads to Nightmare Rarity) is the result of left over darkness from Luna’s dark powers that was on the moon and from the site she got forcibly purified, rather than it being some outside force that just found Luna as its unlucky victim to take advantage of.
That way it shows off more potential of Luna’s dark powers and such.

@Jacalope
I am glad the writers actually confirmed in a Q&A that Nightmare Moon is more like a split personality born from Luna bottling everything up rather than some “symbiote”.
@Background Pony #00AD
Pretty sure that dark essence that arouse behind Luna is her dark powers manifesting after she finally snapped and her split personality emerging to help Luna carry out what she wants.

It still ruins their potential if they were corrupted by a “outside force” instead of something that is part of their actual power. If it turns out the POS “corrupted” and made NMM and Daybreaker, it ruins their potential since its not their own power awoken by someone’s tampering on them(ie. “corruption” from POS)

@Background Pony #00AD
Big problem, if its some “outside corruption” it would mess things up.
My problem with the Nightmare Forces is how it messes up Luna’s potential. That NMM is not her darker half born from her pain and from her inner dark powers but just some outside force happens to find a unlucky victim to take advantage of..

So what was it we saw in the episode “Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 1” where you saw a kind of dark essence arose right behind Luna after she raised the moon to in front of the sun? It did not seem to have happened voluntarily, moreover, as Stygian has touched on something important in his account of how he was the Shadow king. The corruption that came from the outside cannot take over an unwilling pony who has to give in and accept the dark and underlying part of his/her own personality. Corruption can only come to those who voluntarily accept it. When the Shadow pony abducted Celestia and Luna in an alternate dimension, it was not to corrupt them, but to make them accept corruption of their own free will.

@nightshroud96
Yeah, that’s right, giving Nightmare Moon an unnecesally lore screw up NMM backstory. Instead of be the representation of Luna’s hatred and jealousy towards Celestia, it only transforms into another phoenix force that can possess anyone, removing any blame from the person only because they were possessed.

And that is why characters like Daybreaker and the nightmare versions of the mane 6 are very unnecessary concepts that do not contribute anything, they are not like Cosmos and Eris that are ideas with potential but poorly executed that with better hands could contribute something to characters like Discord, only they are ideas that spoil the true potential of a character like Nightmare Moon.

If NMM and Daybreaker show up, I hope its not like by freaking fakes or relying on alternate universe/timeline stuff.
Especially Nightmare Moon’s case..

What may have been the source of corruption for the sisters and Stygian, may be extra-dimensional as seen in both the show and the IDW comics, which may be widespread in the multi-universe itself. From the Cosmos Act and the Manga it is known that dimensions exist, and thus different timelines - so that Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker can appear without being “fakes” in the original dimension / timeline - this possibility arose with the Nightmare Knights Act. Wouldn’t you like to see Celestia and Luna fight their evil twins in a magnificent combat? We do not know how Stygian became corrupt, but we do know that the corruption in him had come from the outside, the same was seen with Luna. And each time it was with “voices” that affect the three over a long period of time.

Also, if Eris were to re-enter the comics, it is not possible to avoid the case of the corrupt sisters and Stygian as she was killed by Daybreaker, who had been corrupted by the Shadow Pony - and we do not know exactly about NMM and TSP was completely killed in the background story. For Cosmos also came from the dimensions and thus the multi-universe, when Discord explained how he met her for the first time. When the end of the Cosmos Act came, it turned out that Cosmos had sought out Discord for her own gain, such as spreading terror and mayhem in unfortunate worlds, and all readers saw that she wanted to corrupt Discord in her own way. Discord fortunately was not interesting in spreading dangerous chaos, the canon Discord was a creature that will not take life or create disasters of its own free will. On the other hand, as the spirit of Chaos, there is little he could show of self-control.

The element of corruption revolves around the powerful beings from Twilight Sparkle to Discord and higher in the MLP. This has never been explained, but is very similar to the one reminiscent of the Star Wars lore about how negative emotions can lead to corruption.
