Derpy and Sea Swirl were just teenagers when they fell in love. They seemed inseparable, being heavily dependent on each other. But over time, Sea Swirl started to distance herself from Derpy. The spark she had felt for the sweet mare had sizzled out and left Swirl wanting to split and pursue other ponies. Unfortunately, Derpy came to Sea Swirl announcing that they would be expecting a foal of their own. Derpy seemed unaffected by it, knowing that the two could do anything as long as they had each other. But when Sea Swirl confessed that she didn’t want to pursue a relationship any further, Derpy was crushed. She still wanted to keep the child, and offered that Sea could see the baby whenever she wanted. Derpy more or less raised Ditzy alone, having to balance her new job at the post office and finishing school and raising the small filly. It helped that Ditzy Do was a fairly easy foal to handle, always in a cheery mood. The two faced the world together, and Derpy knew she could do anything with this little filly beside her.
When Ditzy was a few years old, Derpy met Doctor Whooves. The stallion needed an assistant for his research in time and physics, and Derpy was always looking for another way to earn some money to give her daughter everything she needed and wanted. Doctor Whooves found Derpy odd and clumsy, but she was determined and had such a positive outlook on life. Plus, she usually brought breakfast muffins for the two of them. He knew she had a child and tried his best to make sure that Derpy was always able to spend quality time with her child and do whatever motherly duties she needed to do, so he would occasionally adjust his hours of work or bring projects to her house so she didn’t have to find a babysitter. The two ended up becoming great friends, and Ditzy Do was always excited to see him whenever he visited.
After years of being friends, Derpy built up the courage to ask Doctor Whooves out on a date. She planned the whole thing, with the two of them having a picnic with a bunch of homemade treats. Unfortunately, the food didn’t turn out the best and Derpy was absolutely devastated, but Doctor Whooves remedied the situation by grabbing some food from her favorite restaurant and the two had a picnic in the middle of Ponyville Square. He recommended that, if Derpy liked, they should invite Ditzy Do to join them. After that, most dates involved Ditzy in some way or another. She was even part of Doctor Whoove’s proposal, and Ditzy knew she would always be included in their relationship.
Derpy and Doctor Whooves were married by Mayor Mare, in a ceremony very similar to Cranky and Matilda’s. And a year or so after they had exchanged vows, Derpy had a foal. Ditzy was more than happy to be a big sister, and even helped name the baby. She was extra protective of her little sister, even occasionally stopping others from holding or picking up Time Turner. Fortunately, Doctor Whooves was sure to give the kids some time apart by taking Ditzy on outings during the day. When Time Turner was a toddler, Derpy had her third child. He had the same disability as his mother, which caused Derpy to worry and cling to her youngest, which Whippoorwill didn’t mind at all. As it turns out, he was a complete Mama’s Boy. It took awhile to get him to come out of his shell, but his older sisters were up to the challenge.
