Oh man, once La Grippe 2020 gets under control enough for theaters to reopen, definitely look around for any showings in your area; I’ve gone with my wife and mother in law and several friends to see Kiki, Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Kaguya, Laputa, Mononoke Hime, and Arietty the Borrower at a nearby cinema, and they are magic at full size in surround sound. Our Grails are Nausicaa and Porco Rosso, which we missed last time around; I’ve seen both on university-teaching-theater-sized screens and was blown away enough to understand that those are the two which gain the most from being As Big As Possible.

World's biggest idiot xD
@bflatjeff
That’s true - although as someone who has seen several different versions of The Borrowers (the BBC children’s series and three different film versions - of which Arrietty is one), I think it was a rather sweet adaptation, and stood out a bit more from the others because of what the Japanese animation and storytelling brought to it. So I guess it’s a case of swings and roundabouts really. :)

It was OK, I’m pretty sure I saw it only once. As it was based on an English source (Mary Norton’s The Borrowers) it just seems less distinctive to me. Same with Howl’s Moving Castle, based on books by Diana Wynne Jones (albeit rather loosely). Part of why I enjoy the other films more are the Japanese cultural traits they embody and display.

Right, I meant no human or character antagonist, no “bad guy”.

@bflatjeff
Totoro did have an antagonist, thought: The silent, creeping realization that your childhood will be gone in a few years and time is trembling you with no way to slow it down, let alone stop it.

Mononoke, while amazing, is quite violent and rather dark, can’t really imagine showing it to very young kids.
Kiki is very good, with lots of lovable and relatable characters.
Spirited Away is probably my favorite. The perfect mix of real and fantasy, a heroine who grows, culture and magic.
My Neighbor Totoro is perfect for anybody. A wonderful film with no antagonist, but gorgeous and engaging.

The only thing I really remember about this movie anymore is how dense with upskirt shots it is, and how those shots always showed her wearing a diaper for some reason. That really stuck with me over the years.
