YouTube is so awful they listed Der Fuehrer’s Face as “YouTube Kids”. That’s the infamous short where Donald Duck is in Nazi Germany (it’s a nightmare in the end). In more recent times, it was finally removed from YouTube Kids but now all the old comments have been deleted.

I think it’s because My Little Pony automatically means it’s kids content? That does make sense, but in this case, no it doesn’t. As far as I know, this animation is only intended for older people.

It is what it is. There will likely be videos from years ago on abandoned channels forever marked as “for kids” when they aren’t.

This is more of an abandoned channel issue than it is a COPPA issue. Some of these people probably don’t even know their passwords anymore or have good recovery options setup, and that’s the channel owner’s fault.

Also, some people rarely upload on YouTube and don’t actually care about managing their channels even if they haven’t totally abandoned them. I wouldn’t be surprised if some people still can log in and change their settings but are too lazy/scared to read through the information on COPPA and find out what is and isn’t for kids so they can change the settings. Those kinds of youtube channels aren’t really real content creators though. They’re either just reuploaders or people who upload more for themselves and their friends and family.

I still stand by my stance that in the hands of most competent YouTubers, even one with few subscribers, there are way way way worse issues on YouTube to worry about besides COPPA compliance, unless their content is actually for kids, and in that case I believe the law is good to protect kids at least in a slight amount.

YouTube actually did get fined by the FTC for collecting information on kids who lied about their age though. That’s literally what happened. The FTC was like, “we don’t care, you should be able to tell they were kids even though they said they weren’t 13.”

Well that last part of 16 is fucked yeah, cause then my videos probably would be in trouble. I do primarily YouTube poops, and although my biggest demographics are equally the 18 to 24 and the 25 to whatever ages equally, I still think a lot of people would say that at least half or 2/3rds of YouTube poops would be too close to safely say they’re not for 15 year olds. There is the thing where you can only say “fuck” once in a pg-13 movie though, and if you say it more than that it’s rated R, which is for 17+. So I could just make sure to sentence mix “fuck” into all my videos at least twice, and then I’d be alright.

Well, as I said earlier the reason why most message boards have had the rule where users can’t be under 13 is that in order to use most message boards you have to register with an email and COPPA considers an email to be personal information. If a site knowingly allows someone under 13 to register, then they can be fined thousands for it. It has been a thing for decades

The key word is knowingly though. So GameFAQs, for example, will not ban someone if they found out after they were 13 that they had an account when they were under 13. They aren’t technically violating the act so they don’t care.

On another note, I recently seen some talk about how they want to increase the age from 13 to 16 so some are panicking over that because it would broaden that amount of content affected.

Okay well, first of all, no offense, but I always heard Double Rainboom sucked. Like, not as hard as Dusk’s Dawn, but yeah. I think I saw it myself a long time ago and remember it being bleh.

Second, you can still discuss the show as much now as you did before. Clips on YouTube aren’t the main way people watch or talk about the show.

3rd, you’re right, it does suck that stuff like Snowdrop and Children of The night is probably not safe from COPPA. Snowdrop especially is definitely something where I feel that a legal expert, YouTube, and the FTC would look at it and say, “you can’t change that to ‘not for kids’ cause it appeals too much to kids” and that’s a shame.

Also AMVs/PMVs totally matter what the song is and what style of PMV you make. I’m pretty sure if you did any PMV for any song that has a parental advisory explicit content warning on it, you’d be good and not violating COPPA if you made it. And even less explicit songs it matters what style of PMV or what the song is like this one is obviously in the clear.

I get it, it’s still frustrating and sucks. :/
