the royal guard did get worfed in the rest of the show, but it was the wedding episode where they got their asses handed to them for no reason.
 
guards didn’t get sidelined to show off the main 6. guards got sidelined to teach us that the bride and groom are the real heroes we should all aspire to be.

Of course they do, ya got to decorate the castle halls with something right?

Yeah, I understand, but the same could be said that the cartoon is not Luna’s show… No one in their right mind would call Luna incompetent or pointless. The thing is that if the producers wanted to, they could have done better with the royal guards, without changing much to the show, or accommodating then, like they did with Luna. And yes, I have, but that is not the issue. Just because a trope is used over and over, doesn’t mean that it can’t be challenged or made more interesting, which is my actual point.
 
Not that I’m going to cry over them being idiots in the show, anyway. That is why the gods invented fanfiction.

It’s not their show. Have you ever seen a police procedural about municipal cops where state or federal law enforcement show up, or one about federal law enforcement where they have to deal with local cops or county deputies? The outsiders are almost universally portrayed as either clueless and rigidly authoritarian or bumbling and incompetent fools.

That is true. Though I was rewatching the first avengers movie yesterday and that movie deals right with that. But it still gets the sideline.

But seriously, I feel like guards (and pretty much police) in fictional worlds with superpowers (or even literal gods) get sidelined very badly, and the only reason they exist is to get a sense of familiarity for the viewers. Or if it’s a video game, more NPCs to kill.

Sure they do. They sit around pretending they are worth something, so that the princesses can sit around pretending they are also worth something. I mean… The princesses have got to stare at something, after all.
 
Royal Guards should have a fanfiction fund so that they pool into to pay people to write about them.
