thinking of eponymy always brings me back to the etymology of manhattan. alas, it has nothing to do with man or hats. it was named by the lenape tribe “manaháhtaan” which rougly translates to the place where we get bows. legend says there were some hickory trees growing on the island when the tribe came upon it, trees that were ideal for making bows out of. if you named the island “bowland,” people might think you were making an archery related pun, but what they don’t realize is that all place names are puns. some are just in a language we’re not familiar with anymore.
