Suffice to say, this wasn’t her smartest science fair project.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, this is looked like straight from Invader Zim!

A lot of people are saying “Tim Burton” but his goal is to make something normally cute and churn it into something overly creepy, which is not what I want to do. He pops out the eyes to be very circular to make them tense and alert, and usually keeps hair minimal or away from them. All of his works sprout from different body blob shapes and very long, spindly limbs. Not what I’m interested in so much. All of his characters and concepts within a work usually follow something linear and is much more structured.

Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim, Jhonny the Homicidal Maniac) kinda the same line of concept, also parts hair away or around the eyes, but he’s more akin to overuse of sharp angles, and if he wants something cute, he can do it, using much softer curvatures. His body shapes follow the flow of the limbs to create a greater diversity IMO. He’s more likely to deviate textures for individual characters than Burton.

Unlike him, I don’t want to cut the head in half and raise the forehead to achieve a wide, open mouth.

Roman Dirge (Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl, a friend and influence on Vasquez) takes a more surreal approach and steps further away with textures, even art styles, to flesh out different characters. His work is more illustrative and holistic to the environment, and he pushes the limit more on character designs that I really like. No two characters are alike in a lot of detailed ways. And I like how he minimizes the mouth and makes it warp the face as they talk. But like Burton and Vasquez, Dirge keeps features away from the face and eyes, perhaps more cleanly than they do.

Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Coraline) is a bigger favorite of mine, who keeps a structure, but pushes the limits of his characters’ bodies. He adds a powerful element of how clothes accentuate the shapes the characters and creates interesting diversity, which I find appealing. He also has a technical skill in which a character that is cute or kind or villainous can switch drastically without changing the overall structure by much, something the other 3 guys would struggle to accomplish with their approach.

I also get great amounts of inspiration from VivziePop, who accomplishes things with all the above, but instead of texture, she uses color, shading, shapes, and pose. But what I love most is how she can remain more faithful to a core concept of a character without changing her own style by much because of the flexibility she carries in her inventory. Most importantly, she can use expression to make a character as cute or hideous at will on a moment’s notice.

What I’m trying to accomplish will probably become much more apparent once I get the other Mane 6 kids together in one picture.
