Wait, no, come to think of it, Fluttershy isn’t animal-related either. Butterscotch is fine, I guess.

So I’ve been thinking: why Butterscotch for male Fluttershy? Wouldn’t a name like Bashfloat (Bashful + Float) be better? I mean, it sounds kind of rough, but Fluttershy’s talent isn’t even related to food. Is it just because he’s yellow?

And I agree completely. But when there’s so many females glomming onto it and few males, it just makes you wonder.

While I don’t doubt the possibility of a show being liked by the two genders in collectively different ways, that shouldn’t affect much of the quality. Again, with the Metalocalypse example. Are there a lot of yaoi fanart and fanfiction? Yes. Does this mean they only like the show for hot dudes (save poor Murderface)? No.
 
Or say, even if I found some ladies attractive or even hot in something directed towards the opposite sex, I’d still judge it primarily on the content.
 
If Hetalia has legit good qualities, then there’s no real reason I can’t enjoy it.

I’ll be honest though, there aren’t many male fans, and I’m not sure if there’s a reason for that.
 
The episodes are pretty short. Five minutes a piece.
 
I’d suggest going in order from Hetalia: Axis Powers to Hetalia: World Series, but for the most part there isn’t much of a set storyline. The American Revolution storyline is short, but powerful.

Honestly, my favorite is France. Hungary comes at a close second, though, and she’s a female. So that’s probably weird for any Hetalia fan to say.

It is actually pretty funny, though I can’t say it’s entirely historically accurate. They do through in little quips from history that are interesting, but in they name of comedy things are sometimes bent. The skits are all centered around cultural differences and what certain countries do, which can be interesting to watch. I’ve certainly learned some things from it.
 
The problem is which one you want to watch. The dubbed version is more “polite”, but less funny. The English version, in my opinion, is funnier, but more “offensive”. Honestly, it’s slightly racist, but it’s nothing that a sane person should really be offended by. The nice thing is that they don’t pin one country down to be the “worst” country. All of them are good and bad in their own way.
 
If you can deal with some occasional fan service and gayness (like the Italy/Holy Rome timeline), you’ll be fine.

The same could be said for both, as both pretty much have the same concept: personifying things that aren’t human in real life.
 
But I can’t complain, I see those sweet Germany eyes and I’m set.
 
Upotte, in case you’ve never heard about it, is a mostly fan serviced centered anime about females who are personified guns and go to an academy to work on their sharpshooter skills. And of course, you through in the one human in the academy who has a crush on a thong wearing student and…

This is coming from a guy who likes history: Is Hetalia a good watch for someone who doesn’t watch that much anime?

Well, I assume they want to get guys and girls into whatever they’re making, so they mix good storyline and attractive men. It’s a win win for both genders.

Although I’d argue that Yugioh started out as a fanservice yaoi title and got stripped down to a shounen gaming setpiece. XD)

@Brother XD I dunno, for some reason the most badass dudes in anime also tend to be bishounen as hell. The pinnacle of cross-gender appeal, lol.

(Besides, Ouran is basically just one big fan service anime)
