I play it. Never payed Gameloft a dime and managed to complete all the quest lines and finish most of the events. Also got Moonlight Raven and over 200 of the 400 ponies in the game. You can do it, just takes a long time.

That said some of them are impossible to get without paying. There’s one pony you have to pay $1000 (one thousand) to get and there’s no other way to do it. So playing for free will never get you all the ponies, but getting a bunch is easy enough.
